99 problems and a rotation is one

It's safe to say the Orioles have some kinks to work out, but the starting rotation might be what needs the most focus. Their current rotation can't exactly go deep in games and is not very effective in its limited time on the mound, writes Matt Perez. Camden Depot

It is going to be another raw night at Camden Yards. The AccuWeather forecast calls for periods of rain during the Yankees and Orioles game. The temperature will be in the low 50s. Bring a park and an overcoat, if you are in town.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi indicated last night that he thought left fielder Brett Gardner may not be a player for the next couple of days. The first sign that is the case is that the Yankees have called up outfielder Ben Gamel. Gamel, 23, was hitting .286 with a .709 OPS for Triple-A Scranton. He is a left-handed batter.

Despite tallying seven hits and four walks, the Orioles got shut out by the Yankees 7-0. The loss, in which Baltimore grounded into three inning-ending double plays and stranded eight runners, drops the Birds into a first-place tie with Boston.

Comeback for Britton this week?

According to the Baltimore Sun, Orioles closer Zach Britton has said "this week is a good timeline" to return from his sprained ankle. Britton also said he played catch Tuesday before batting practice to test his sprained left ankle for the first time since injuring it Saturday night. Baltimore Sun

There's more to earning $161 million than just hitting bombs. Orioles slugger Chris Davis has more "good fielding plays" so far this season than any first baseman in baseball (19). And since the start of 2014, his 13 defensive runs saved is tops among AL 1B's.

Count Yankees manager Joe Girardi as one person encouraged by Luis Severino's start on Tuesday. In his loss, Severino allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits, two of which were Mark Trumbo homers, in six innings. Severino's batting average against (.333) is the third worst in baseball. Still, Girardi is encouraged. "I think he is closer," Girardi said.

No Hardy, no Britton, no problem. Mark Trumbo went deep twice, Chris Tillman tied a career-high with nine strikeouts, and Darren O'Day got the save in the Orioles 4-1 victory over the Yankees. The win moves the O's into a first-place tie with the Red Sox.

Standing ovation for Chris Tillman, who fans the side in the seventh. The Orioles righty, who's likely done after 110 pitches, has tied a career-high with nine punchouts on the night. In his last three starts, all against AL East foes, Tillman has a 1.37 ERA with 22 K's in 19.2 innings.

Mark Trumbo just took Luis Severino deep for the second time tonight to extend the Orioles lead to 4-1. It's his second multi-mash this season, and the ninth of his career. He's now tied for the AL lead with nine dingers.

Andrew Marchand ESPN Senior Writer

Yankees starter Luis Severino has struggled on the mound so far in his second season. On Tuesday, so far, he has struggled at first. For the second time in four innings, he has dropped a flip at first base. Here, in the fourth, it has cost him a run. He is now down 2-1 to the Orioles.
