Chacin dazzles Tigers for complete game (0:32)

Tigers drop third straight game with a 5-1 loss to the Angels. Wheels fall off in the eighth inning and an otherwise stellar start by Justin Verlander is spoiled. Credit to Jhoulys Chacin, who pitched very well, but Tigers offense came up painfully short.

An incongruous pitching line for Tigers ace Justin Verlander: 7 1/3 IP, 4H, 4R, 4ET, 7Ks, 116 pitches. Hardly a reflection of his night, but Tigers imploded in eighth. 5-0 Angels.

Tigers ace Justin Verlander leaves the game with one out remaining in the eighth and Detroit trailing 3-0. Critical sequence of events with Andrew Romine making diving catch at short, but throw to home not in time. Catcher James McCann charged with error after off-balance throw to first. Angels open up a 1-0 lead, tacking on an extra pair of runs. Appears likely a stellar performance from Verlander will be for naught.

Hometown boy Andrew Romine the one to break up Angels' Jhoulys Chacin no-hit bid in the sixth inning. Tigers INF with a two-out sharp single to left. Justin Verlander gave up his first hit of the game against leadoff batter CJ Cron in the fifth. Still, superb pitching from both players through 7 innings tonight

Quite the pitching duel developing here at Angel Stadium in Anaheim. 12 up, 12 down for both Justin Verlander and Jhoulys Chacin through the first four innings.

Here are the Memorial Day caps the Detroit Tigers will be wearing tonight vs. the Angels

Tigers' Andrew Romine will be playing SS tonight, a nice opportunity for him to play at his hometown stadium. His father Kevin, who played for the Boston Red Sox, will be on hand for tonight's game against the Angels. Romine got to spend last night in his own bed, see his family, wife, dogs, etc. Was a nice reprieve from the road: "It's home. It's really home."

Tigers pitcher Jordan Zimmermann is on track to make his return from a groin injury on Friday against the Chicago White Sox, according to manager Brad Ausmus. Zimmermann did fielding and agility drills today and is slated to throw another bullpen session tomorrow.

Tigers rise to No. 16 in rankings

Detroit climbs three spots according to ESPN's expert panel. The Tigers dropped two of three road games against the A's this weekend and will stay in California for three with the Angels beginning Monday night. Week 8 Rankings

Veteran second baseman Ian Kinsler upset about sixth-inning error that, along with Cameron Maybin miscue in CF, proved costly in Tigers' 4-2 win. Kinsler particularly disappointed about not getting the win for pitcher Mike Pelfrey, who "battled his butt off" and pitched well on Sunday: "To not come up with that play hurts a little bit."

Oakland A's take the series with a 4-2 win against the Tigers today. Pelfrey falls to 0-5, though the club's sixth-inning demise definitely not all on his shoulders. Ian Kinsler error and Cameron Maybin miscue on Butler's ball to CF supremely costly as well.

Tigers pitcher Mike Pelfrey's day ends with bases loaded and two outs in the sixth inning. Pelfrey, encountering some difficulty in the third time through the A's order, gave up two hits and two walks, but second baseman Ian Kinsler's untimely error also extended the inning, allowed A's to score. 2-1
