Raul Mondesi No. 73 prospect in 2016

Right now, Mondesi looks like a great defensive shortstop who contributes little with the bat. That said, he's so young and athletically gifted that he could be much more. Kansas City has two total prospects in the top 100. Law: Top 100 prospects (Insider)

Royals, Moustakas agree to 2-year deal

3B Mike Moustakas will avoid arbitration for the next two seasons as he agreed to a two-year, $14.3 million deal. He hit .284 last year with 34 doubles, 22 homers and 82 RBIs and earned his first All-Star nod.

Did Mark Teahen carry 2006 Royals?

Five of their regular position players were older than 30. Their top five starters had ERAs of 5.71, 5.34, 6.48, 5.12 and 5.64. Most of the relievers had ERAs over 5.00 as well. Teahen, however, managed a 3.7 WAR on this 100-loss squad. The best players on terrible teams

Royals have No. 23 farm system in 2016

The Royals used the fruits of the system to win a World Series and another AL pennant. Naturally, they're now light on position players, and many of the pitching prospects left are several years out. Ranking all 30 farm systems (Insider)

World Series or Super Bowl contender?

Bo Jackson was an All-Star outfielder for the Royals and a Pro Bowl running back for the Los Angeles Raiders, but a hip injury kept him out of both Cooperstown and Canton. Dual MLB-NFL players

Don't write off Ian Desmond yet

Despite his flaws, the shortstop offers power at a key position and he's durable. The Padres need a shortstop and their first-round pick is protected. The Royals could use Desmond as a big upgrade at second base. Free agents worth the gamble

Ventura close to putting it together

Armed with a blazing fastball and hammer curve, Yordano Ventura has always had the potential to dominate in the majors. While that has yet to happen, a closer look at his stats down the stretch last season suggest he could soon be poised for a breakout. Sarris: Hidden aces (Insider)

Stark: What's fueling baseball's Bullpen Mania?

Thanks to the Royals' success, loading up on relievers has become all the rage. But teams trying to copy their formula should beware: Bulking up your bullpen is not as easy as it looks.

Curveball bodes well for Ventura

Part of the reason Yordano Ventura enjoyed more success in the second half of the 2015 season was the increased use of his hard curve, which generates plenty of ground balls. The offering grades as one of the top pitches among starters. Best pitches in MLB (Insider)
