Dodgers' Urias, 19, chased in 3rd inning of debut

Nineteen-year-old Dodgers rookie Julio Urias gave up three runs in the first inning of his debut Friday night against the Mets and exited after 2 2/3 innings.

Urias' debut spoiled by Mets (0:45)

Dodgers 19-year-old rookie starter Julio Urias lasted just 2 2/3 innings in his debut Friday against the Mets. He was limited to 90 pitches regardless of how he performed, but was lifted at 81 pitches after walking his fourth batter of the day and loading the bases. The Mets led 3-1 in the third inning when he departed.

Carlos Urías on all the comparisons his son Julio has drawn to Fernando Valenzuela: "Those comparisons to Fernando Valenzuela have happened all over, mostly in the media. But my son and I have talked a lot about it, and we agree, and mostly he has told me himself that Fernando Valenzuela is Fernando Valenzuela and, honestly, there will never be another one like him. Like my son says, I'm going to work on having my own career and try to do it the best I can. He has to build his own name. Those comparisons are greatly appreciated, but not when it comes with the pressure to be Fernando Valenzuela."

Dodgers catcher Yasmani Grandal told me that Julio Urías has the potential to be as good or better than any of the young starters in the talented Mets pitching staff: "(In Urías) we have a prospect that can pitch almost the same or better than them, because he has better secondary pitches and can throw up to 97-98 mph. I have never seen a pitcher that young with such good secondary pitches. The Mets prospects had success with those fastballs around 98-100mph, but their secondary pitches were not as good as Urias'."

"I will take really good care of your son" -Dodgers manager Dave Roberts to Juani Urías, Julio's mom

Julio Urías has some striking similarities to Fernando Valenzuela (0:30)

The Dodgers insist that while there is an outline for how they see Julio Urias' season progressing, there are no guarantees past the 19-year-old's debut Friday at New York. "He's at 90 pitches tonight, and after tonight we'll all sit down and evaluate going forward what is best for Julio as well as the organization," manager Dave Roberts said. So whether Urias starts in five days at Wrigley Field against the Cubs remains to be seen.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts admitted to being "anxious" in advance of Julio Urias' major league debut Friday at New York. The 19-year-old left-hander is the Dodgers' top prospect and is considered by many as the top prospect in all of baseball.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts says they will talk about whether Julio Urías will stay in rotation or not after his start today.

Asked if he cared to comment about his major league debut, Clayton Kershaw didn't even wait for a Julio Urias question to be asked. "He's just better. He's just better than I was at 19. Much better," Kershaw said about his teenage teammate, who will make his major league debut Friday. At 20-years old, Kershaw threw 102 pitches during his debut on May 25, 2008, giving up two runs on five hits of a no-decision against the Cardinals, while striking out seven.

The Dodgers will have Yasmani Grandal behind the plate Monday to catch the debut of 19-year-old starter Julio Urias. With fellow starter Alex Wood pushed back to Monday because of triceps soreness, the Dodgers will have their top prospect make his major league debut against the Mets.
