Cabrera finally comes through with RISP

Before his third-inning double to drive in Alejandro De Aza from second on Tuesday, Asdrubal Cabrera was hitless in each of his last 32 at-bats with runners in scoring position. He fell five such ABs short of matching Gregg Jefferies' franchise record for position players set in 1990, the Elias Sports Bureau notes.

Syndergaard settled in too late Tuesday

Noah Syndergaard labored through his first three innings against the Cardinals before cruising through his next three. However, the damage was done, as St. Louis held on to win 3-2.

Dilson Herrera actually slept funny on the bus from Las Vegas to Fresno and was scratched from the PCL game on Tuesday for that reason. It was just a coincidence in timing that he was scratched nearly simultaneously with Jose Reyes' intercostal injury, I'm told.

Mets' Reyes strains rib muscle in loss to Cards

Jose Reyes strained his left intercostal muscle on the last swing of his final at-bat in the Mets' loss to the Cardinals in Game 1 of Tuesday's doubleheader

Adam Rubin ESPN Staff Writer

Dilson Herrera was in Las Vegas' original lineup on Tuesday night at Fresno and was scratched. So it would seem that if Jose Reyes requires a DL stint for an intercostal strain suffered in Game 1 of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Cardinals, Herrera is the likely call-up.

The Cardinals forced Noah Syndergaard to throw 115 pitches in Tuesday's loss and though his fastball velocity matched his season average (98 mph), his 64 percent fastball strike rate was his third-lowest of 2016. In fact, his three lowest fastball strike rates have come in his last three starts. Manager Terry Collins didn't know why Syndergaard was having pitch-count issues. "If we knew, we'd address it," he said. Collins did say Syndergaard was working with pitching coach Dan Warthen on one pitch grip, but didn't specify which pitch.

Mets manager had no problem with Curtis Granderson's decision to try for second base on Yoenis Cespedes' fly out in the ninth inning. Granderson was thrown out by Cardinals center fielder Tommy Pham and one out later, the mets had a tough one-run loss. "The guy needed to make a perfect throw and he did," Collins said. Collins also didn't take issue with third base coach Tim Teufel holding Jose Reyes at third base on Cespedes' double earlier in the game. "Tim had a better angle than anybody. It's his call."

Small chance Mets trade Rosario

1B Dominic Smith's power is finally starting to show up in Double-A, but SS Amed Rosario is hitting .321 at age 20 and has reached Double-A. He looks like the long-term solution at the more difficult position to fill, David Schoenfield writes. Untouchable players for all 30 teams

Left-handed reliever Josh Smoker will be the 26th man for Game 2 of the doubleheader. Smoker, a former Nationals first-round pick, has a 4.73 ERA in 43 relief appearances with Las Vegas.

Mets manager Terry Collins said that Yoenis Cespedes and Jose Reyes are each expected to play in both games of today's doubleheader, barring any signs of fatigue. Cespedes has had no issues since returning from his quad injury. Collins also said lefty Josh Smoker will be the team's 26th man for Game 2 of the doubleheader "if he gets here." Smoker has a 4.73 ERA, but has 67 strikeouts in 45 2/3 innings with Triple-A Las Vegas. As for the impact of yesterday's rainout on the starting rotation, Collins said picking a starter for Saturday has not been discussed.
