Alex Rodriguez' hamstring pull is a "1-plus," according to Joe Girardi, which is more severe than CC Sabathia's groin pull. Girardi said he "hoped" A-Rod would return at the end of the 15-day DL period "but we'll have to see how he heals." A similar injury suffered by the Marlins Giancarlo Stanton in 2013 sidelined the then 24-year-old for five weeks. A-Rod turns 41 in July.

Carlos Beltrán on the cancellation of the games in Puerto Rico: "This is something that will affect Puerto Rico. People were really looking forward to the series and to have the opportunity to attend Major League Baseball games in Puerto Rico. We all know that Puerto Rico is going through a very difficult time and this is basically just another low blow for the island. I don't what is the rate of people infected with the virus in Puerto Rico, compared with Florida, the Dominican Republic, Cuba, and other places where the Zika virus has been found. But at the end of the day, MLB and the people who have made this decision must have their reasons."

Joe Girardi said CC Sabathia's groin pull, in his left (push off) leg, was diagnosed as a Grade 1, which normally means at least a three-week absence. "I think you would feel pretty fortunate if you could get him then," Girardi said. Ivan Nova will take over Sabathia's rotation spot beginning Monday night against the KC Royals.

Yankees place Sabathia (groin) on 15-day DL

Yankees starter CC Sabathia is headed to the 15-day disabled list with a strained left groin after throwing seven scoreless innings against the Orioles on Wednesday.

Andrew Marchand ESPN Senior Writer

As if the last place Yankees don't have enough problems, starter CC Sabathia is joining Alex Rodriguez on the disabled list. Sabathia has a strained left groin. Sabathia pitched his best game of the year on Wednesday, throwing seven scoreless innings against the Orioles to snap a six-game Yankee losing streak. Sabathia will likely be replaced by Ivan Nova in the rotation. Reliever Phil Coke is being called up from Triple-A.

Yankees announce that they placed LHP CC Sabathia on the 15-day disabled list (retroactive to 5/5) with a left groin strain and signed LHP Phil Coke to a Major League contract and selected him to the 25-man roster from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

How can Yankees turn season around? (1:18)

It looks good for the Yankees and Red Sox to play tonight in the Bronx, according to AccuWeather. While a half-inch will fall today, the weather service predicts it should be manageable by first pitch a little after 7 p.m. The players may endure some drizzle, something they are becoming increasingly used to this season. It will be raw as temperatures will be in the 40s.

If you're willing to lose games with Johnny Barbato, maybe you deserve last place. The Yankees used Dellin Betances for one inning and just 10 pitches and he came out in a tie game. Barbato came in, allowed two hits, and THEN Andrew Miller was summoned. He gave up the game-losing sac fly. 9-17.

Andrew Marchand ESPN Senior Writer

Yankees manager Joe Girardi said he used Johnny Barbato instead of closer Andrew Miller to begin the 10th against the Orioles because the Yankees didn't have the lead. If he had used Miller to start the 10th, Girardi reasoned, he would still have to use Barbato. In the 10th. Barbato allowed the first two runners to reach. By the time Miller got in the game, it was too late, as Pedro Alvarez's sac fly won it.

2015: Andrew Miller begins year with 17 2/3 shutout IP. Finally allows run, May 19. 2016: Miller begins year with 10 shutout IP. Finally allows run, May 5. Both runs lost the Yankees an extra-inning game.

Here we go. The classic case of "guy who just made the big, game-saving defensive play" coming to bat with a chance to win it: Dustin Ackley.

That was Chase Headley's 84th PA this season without an extra base hit. No one else in baseball has more than 56 without one (Rafael Ortega).

Schoop shows off, saves ump (0:32)

Yankees manager Joe Girardi was ejected from Thursday night's game for arguing during the fourth inning. Girardi got into it with third base ump Chris Guccione, ranting and waving his arms. It wasn't entirely clear why Girardi argued, though, there was press box speculation that he felt a balk call was missed. There is no score between the Orioles and Yankees in the fourth.

The Yankees are waiting for Dr. Chris Ahmad's opinion on Alex Rodriguez's hamstring MRI on before making any announcements about how long A-Rod will be out. It may be a little awkward if Rodriguez meets with Ahmad since he once sued the doctor for malpractice. The suit was filed when A-Rod was suing everybody, during the Biogenesis investigation. It was later dropped.

Andrew Marchand ESPN Senior Writer

Benching Chase Headley? Yankees fans might think it is a good idea, but manager Joe Girardi does not. "It is way too early for that," Girardi said. Headly has not had an extra base hit all season and is hitting .153 in 72 at-bats. He is in the second season of a four-year, $52 million contract. Headley is not in the lineup on Thursday night here in Baltimore, however Girardi said he plans to put him back out there at Yankee Stadium on Friday against the Red Sox. Girardi described not playing Headly as a simple day off. Ronald Torreyes, hitting .375 in 24 at-bats, is at third.
