If you're willing to lose games with Johnny Barbato, maybe you deserve last place. The Yankees used Dellin Betances for one inning and just 10 pitches and he came out in a tie game. Barbato came in, allowed two hits, and THEN Andrew Miller was summoned. He gave up the game-losing sac fly. 9-17.

Andrew Marchand ESPN Senior Writer

Yankees manager Joe Girardi said he used Johnny Barbato instead of closer Andrew Miller to begin the 10th against the Orioles because the Yankees didn't have the lead. If he had used Miller to start the 10th, Girardi reasoned, he would still have to use Barbato. In the 10th. Barbato allowed the first two runners to reach. By the time Miller got in the game, it was too late, as Pedro Alvarez's sac fly won it.

2015: Andrew Miller begins year with 17 2/3 shutout IP. Finally allows run, May 19. 2016: Miller begins year with 10 shutout IP. Finally allows run, May 5. Both runs lost the Yankees an extra-inning game.

Here we go. The classic case of "guy who just made the big, game-saving defensive play" coming to bat with a chance to win it: Dustin Ackley.

That was Chase Headley's 84th PA this season without an extra base hit. No one else in baseball has more than 56 without one (Rafael Ortega).

Schoop shows off, saves ump (0:32)

Yankees manager Joe Girardi was ejected from Thursday night's game for arguing during the fourth inning. Girardi got into it with third base ump Chris Guccione, ranting and waving his arms. It wasn't entirely clear why Girardi argued, though, there was press box speculation that he felt a balk call was missed. There is no score between the Orioles and Yankees in the fourth.

The Yankees are waiting for Dr. Chris Ahmad's opinion on Alex Rodriguez's hamstring MRI on before making any announcements about how long A-Rod will be out. It may be a little awkward if Rodriguez meets with Ahmad since he once sued the doctor for malpractice. The suit was filed when A-Rod was suing everybody, during the Biogenesis investigation. It was later dropped.

Benching Chase Headley? Yankees fans might think it is a good idea, but manager Joe Girardi does not. "It is way too early for that," Girardi said. Headly has not had an extra base hit all season and is hitting .153 in 72 at-bats. He is in the second season of a four-year, $52 million contract. Headley is not in the lineup on Thursday night here in Baltimore, however Girardi said he plans to put him back out there at Yankee Stadium on Friday against the Red Sox. Girardi described not playing Headly as a simple day off. Ronald Torreyes, hitting .375 in 24 at-bats, is at third.

Andrew Marchand ESPN Senior Writer

We are admittedly reading into things a little bit, but Yankees manager Joe Girardi nor Alex Rodriguez again had an update on how long he would be out. Girardi said the team wants its doctor to review the MRI of A-Rod's hamstring. A Baltimore radiologist has given the Yankees an opinion. Maybe it means little and the Yankees are just being cautious, but if the MRI caused no reason to worry, would the Yankees need to wait another day?

It is going to be another raw night at Camden Yards. The AccuWeather forecast calls for periods of rain during the Yankees and Orioles game. The temperature will be in the low 50s. Bring a park and an overcoat, if you are in town.

Yankees left fielder Brett Gardner is out of the lineup after being hit with a fastball on his right elbow on Wednesday. Starlin Castro moves into Gardner's No. 2 slot in the order, while Aaron Hicks is in left and Dustin Ackley is in right. The ultra-struggling Chase Headley is on the bench against righty Kevin Gausman, as Ronald Torreyes is at third.
