Yanks bench slumping A-Rod for 2nd straight game

A persistent hitting slump that worsened following his return from the DL last week has Yankees DH Alex Rodriguez out of the lineup Tuesday for the second straight game.

Alex Rodriguez declined comment when asked to talk about being out of the lineup for the second straight day. Yankees manager Joe Girardi indicated he had not spoken with A-Rod about the situation.

"If I don't play him, then everyone thinks he is done and I don't necessarily think that," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said of 40-year-old Alex Rodriguez, who is not in the lineup for second straight game. "I still think that he can still be productive for us. I chose to give him a day off yesterday, he played basically six days in a row [counting two minor league rehab games] and [J.A.] Happ has been a tough matchup for him so I chose to give him today off."

Yankee reserve Dustin Ackley is done for the season with a torn labrum, manager Joe Girardi said. Ackley will have shoulder surgery this week. At the moment, the Yankees are sticking with Austin Romine and Chase Headley as the backup first basemen. Rob Refsnyder played a little first in college. Nick Swisher is struggling at Triple-A.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi would not guarantee that Alex Rodriguez will be in the lineup on Wednesday. A-Rod is on the bench Tuesday for the second straight game. Brett Gardner, whom A-Rod is conversing with, is also on the pine against Blue Jays lefty J.A. Happ on Tuesday. A-Rod is hitting .170 on the season.

Alex Rodriguez is on the bench for a second consecutive game, which could be the start of a trend. Rodriguez is hitting .170 with six homers and 14 RBIs in 24 games this year. Since he returned from his hamstring injury last week, he has just one hit in 16 at-bats. It was a home run. He has struck out nine of his 16 times at-bats. Over his last 75 games, dating back to last year, A-Rod is batting .180 with 15 homers and 40 RBIs. Against Tuesday's Blue Jays starter J,A. Happ A-Rod is 0-for-15 in his career. Carlos Beltran is DHing, while Rob Refsnyder is in right and Aaron Hicks is in left. The struggling Brett Gardner is also on the bench.

For the second straight game, the Yankees barely had any offense. Just like on Sunday, they only scored two runs on a home run. Unlike Sunday, the Yankees lost, 4-2, to the Blue Jays.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi compared Luis Severino to Roy Haladay. Severino, 22, was sent to Triple-A on Monday after beginning the year at 0-6 with a 7.46 ERA. "This is not unusual," Girardi said. "This is not abnormal. I'll bring up a name right here we saw -- Roy Halladay. He got sent back down because he struggled. He figured it out and was pretty darn good. This is not unusual. This is part of the process young players."

Dustin Ackley has a torn labrum, according to Yankees manager Joe Girardi. Surgery is a possibility, which would likely finish the reserve first baseman for the season. At the moment, the Yankees will have backup catcher Austin Romine act as the main backup to Mark Teixeira at first.

Alex Rodriguez is out of the lineup against Blue Jays righty Marco Estrada. Carlos Beltran is starting at DH, while Aaron Hicks is in right. A-Rod is 1-for-16 since he returned from the DL. The one hit was a homer. He is hitting .170 in 88 at-bats this season. A-Rod started his first four games back after recovering from a hamstring injury.
