Austin Meadows among AFL standouts

From what he showed in the Arizona Fall League, Meadows is a middle-of-the-order bat who hits well enough to play anywhere. If he stays in center, he could even make some All-Star teams. Arizona Fall League recap (Insider)

The Happ-ening guy on the market

J.A. Happ may not have a long track record of success, but his numbers with the Pirates down the stretch have plenty of teams interested in him. The left-hander has the look of a sleeper signing. Second-tier steals (Insider)

Pirates, Marlins to play series in Puerto Rico

The Pirates and Marlins will play a two-game series on May 30-31, 2016 at San Juan's Hiram Bithorn Stadium, with the latter date being Roberto Clemente Day. It will be the first games played in Puerto Rico since the Mets and Marlins played a three-game series in 2010.

Jake Arrieta wins the NL Cy Young. I had one of the 30 ballots and voted this way: (5) Jacob deGrom, (4) Gerrit Cole, (3) Clayton Kershaw, (2) Zack Greinke, (1) Jake Arrieta.

More bullpen fodder: Teams in the closer market say Joakim Soria is looking for a contract in the vicinity of 3 years, $27 million.

Jayson Stark Senior Writer,

Even with Francisco Rodriguez off to Detroit, amazing how many closers are still out there to be traded for. Aroldis Chapman. Andrew Miller. Jonathan Papelbon. Mark Melancon. Ken Giles. Had an exec of one team tell me this week he thinks the Yankees "will move" Miller this winter -- for a big, Craig Kimbrel-like package built around big-league ready starters.

The biggest fish in the smallest pond

Neal Huntington had perhaps the best year of any MLB GM when it came to inexpensive moves paying off, most evidenced by the signing of KBO import Jung-Ho Kang. Pittsburgh's GM continues to do the most with the least available resources. MLB executive awards (Insider)

Clint Hurdle for Manager of the year?

The Bucs cracked the postseason for the third straight year. Hurdle's conversion from old-school managing to open-minded analytics has helped make that happen. Manager of the Year: The case for Hurdle

Bucs still looking for upgrade at first

Despite the offense he provides, Pedro Alvarez's poor defense hurt Pittsburgh this year. For that reason, the team will search for an alternative this offseason, Buster Olney writes. Biggest holes on contenders (Insider)

I'm annually among the first to release my Hall of Fame ballot. This year is no different. Here are my 10 (the maximum allowed). Among newcomers, I voted for Ken Griffey Jr. and Trevor Hoffman. With two more spaces after voting for selections from my ballot last year, I added Lee Smith and Alan Trammell. Trammell is in his final year on the ballot. He received 25.1 percent of the vote a year ago.

Sources: Pirates-Marlins trade was compensation

A seemingly lopsided trade between the Pirates and Marlins was actually compensation for Pittsburgh allowing highly regarded assistant Jim Benedict to leave for Miami, according to sources.

Pirates should trade Pedro Alvarez

Alvarez is no longer playable at third base. He can be an average defensive first baseman, but the Pirates shouldn't pay him over $7 million in arbitration when they have prospects arriving for cheaper. Buyer's Guide: Corner infielders (Insider)
