Suarez bucks trends in win vs. Pirates

Albert Suarez got the win against the Pirates on Thursday. Rookie pitchers had made seven previous starts against Pittsburgh this season, going 1-3 with a 9.22 ERA in those games, the Elias Sports Bureau notes. Furthermore, Suarez joins Brad Hennessey (2005) as the only Giants rookies in the last 18 seasons to beat the Bucs.

Joe Panik keeps coming up clutch

Panik hit a go-ahead three-run triple in the third inning with the Giants down 1-0 on Thursday. His four go-ahead RBIs during the team's seven-game road trip mark the first time a San Francisco player has done that since Matt Williams in Sept. 1995, per the Elias Sports Bureau.

Giants open to MadBum in HR Derby

Giants manager Bruce Bochy said Wednesday that the team would be "open-minded" to the idea of Madison Bumgarner competing in the Home Run Derby. For his part, Bumgarner has no desire to participate in a pitchers-only derby. San Jose Mercury News

Andrew McCutchen not in starting lineup for Pirates. Manager Clint Hurdle says he needed some rest and that club has considered a couple days at some point. "That could be an option down the road. That's one where he would have to be brought into the conversation about as well."

Wednesday's win for Giants was quite a relief

The Giants keep playing optimal baseball. One reason why is the performance of their bullpen, which doesn't have gaudy numbers but gets the job done.
