Cardinals rally behind Adam Wainwright's hitting

After the St. Louis Cardinals lost three of Adam Wainwright's first four starts, they have won two in a row thanks in large part to his bat.

Adam Wainwright's homer gives him 2 hits this season. One HR. One triple. No singles. No doubles. Try that on your Play Station sometime

Randal Grichuk, mired in an 0-for-20 slump that has put his batting average at .179, was out of Monday night's lineup vs. the Philadelphia Phillies. The Cardinals have a bit of a conundrum with Grichuk, who they were hoping would become their everyday center fielder this season. He is struggling with pitch recognition and the only way to fix that is to see live pitching. On the other hand, they need production and players like Jeremy Hazelbaker and Brandon Moss have provided more. If he keeps struggling, the question might arise whether he needs to be sent to Triple-A Memphis to work on recognizing breaking balls. Mike Matheny talks about Grichuk's struggles:

The Phillies & Cardinals play tonight in St. Louis. Amazingly, the Phillies (15-10) have a better record than the Cardinals (12-13). Last time that happened: The legendary Game 5 of the 2011 NLDS

Adam Wainwright and his 7.16 ERA take the mound tonight for the Cardinals. One thing to watch: Is he getting any swings and misses? Of 100 qualified starters, Wainwright (91), Michael Wacha (96) and Mike Leake (100) all rank in the bottom 10 in miss rate. Those three have combined for a 5.32 ERA.

Not in the Cards during April

Don't hit the panic button just yet on the Cardinals. They drop one notch to No. 10 this week in the rankings, but a sub .500 record at this point in the season doesn't mean they're out of it. Look no further than 2014. Week 4 Power Rankings

Carlos Martinez said he will be able to maintain his focus despite having to deal with a civil lawsuit filed against him by a woman in a Miami court last week. Martinez also was dealing with flu-like symptoms and didn't know he would be able to make Sunday's start until he woke up and called manager Mike Matheny to tell him he was a go. Here he talks about Sunday's start through interpreter (and catcher) Brayan Pena:

Jhonny Peralta took groundballs Sunday for the first time since he tore a ligament in his left thumb during spring training. Peralta remains weeks away from returning, but he also can read the writing on the wall. The Cardinals likely will try to find a way to get both both shortstops, Peralta and Aledmys Diaz, in the lineup at the same time. Diaz leads the major leagues with a .423 batting average. Manager Mike Matheny said Diaz is a good enough athlete to play multiple positions. He played an entire season at third base in Cuba and he started learning second base this spring. "How he's hitting right now now, he needs to be on the team," Peralta said. "Whether it's at shortstop or somewhere else, he needs to be on our team."

Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said Carlos Martinez is "good to go" for today's start against the Washington Nationals. There was some question about whether he would make the start, not because of the lawsuit filed against him in Miami, but because he -- like a lot of the Cardinals lately -- has been dealing with flu-like symptoms.
