When John Gibbons was fired as manager by the Blue Jays in midseason 2008, he was replaced by Cito Gaston, who managed the Jays to Series titles in '92 and '93. Gibbons returned in 2013; Gaston is throwing out the ceremonial first pitch this afternoon.

Jays slot Tulo 5th; Texas' Perez to start Game 3

Shortstop Troy Tulowitzki, who missed most of the final three weeks of the regular season after breaking his left shoulder blade, is batting fifth in the Blue Jays' first playoff game in 22 years

Jim Caple Senior Writer,

Rangers manager Jeff Banister says Martin Perez will start Game 3. "We like how he pitches. That's the short answer but it's about his body of work and how he's thrown lately and that he's primarily a ground ball guy. Plus it gives us another couple veteran arms available in the bullpen early on." Perez is 1-1 with 2.25 ERA past four starts.

Marcus Stroman. Toronto's Game 2 pitcher, on ovation Jays players got at last night's Leafs game: "It's been unreal, the love that we've been getting from Toronto, from all of Canada has been unbelievable. I feel like we feed off that energy that the country brings us and we're excited to get out there and kind of put the country in our back and play for an entire nation. So the boys couldn't be more hyped, excited to get going here."

Grantland: ALDS Preview: Breaking Down Rangers vs. Blue Jays and Astros vs. Royals

The Blue Jays were under .500 as late as July 28 and finished with a historically great run differential and a six-game edge in the AL East. The Rangers were under .500 as late as August 13 and won the AL West. The Astros and Royals have the fewest and third-fewest wins over the past 10 seasons, yet here they are, brazenly being good baseball teams, as if that's just normal now and we're supposed to sit back and accept it. It should be a fun ride, so let's preview some playoff games.

Roof or no roof? According to the Accuweather forecast, it will be dry Thursday afternoon in Toronto with clouds and limited sunshine. If the roof is left open, the first pitch temperature will be near 60 degrees and then remain nearly steady throughout the game. The wind will be rather light and from the southeast at 10 mph or less. There is a small chance for a shower toward the end of the game, but the most likely scenario is that any showers hold off until after the game later Thursday evening or Thursday night. David Price's preference? "Whatever our hitters want," he said.

Senior Circuit vs. Junior Circuit, indeed: Tomorrow, the NLDS begins with one charter member of the National League — the Cubs — two other “Classic Eight” members of the NL — the Cardinals and Dodgers — and one 1962 expansion club — the Mets. Combined years of Senior Circuit service, including this year: 444. Today, the ALDS begins with three 1960s expansion teams — Rangers, Astros and Royals — and one 1970s expansion team — the Blue Jays — one of which (the Astros) switched from the NL to the AL in 2013. Combined years of Junior Circuit service, including this year: 144. That’s exactly a 300-year difference.
