55-44, 3rd in AL East

The Blue Jays are facing a tough decision with Aaron Sanchez. In the wild-card era, only Felix Hernandez has had a lower ERA among qualified AL starters age 23 or younger. But with another strong outing so far tonight, he's about to hit his career high in innings. Do they move him to the bullpen to save innings? But can they win the division without him starting? I'd keep him in the rotation and hope for the best.

Lineup: Blue Jays (55-44) vs. Padres (43-56)

Blue Jays rise in ESPN rankings

Where would the Jays be without J.A. Happ? He won his seventh straight decision on Sunday, and Toronto has won his past eight starts. Is a two-spot climb enough for the Blue Jays to pass the Orioles or Red Sox? Week 16 Power Rankings

Two runs are finally enough for Jays

Four Toronto pitchers held the Mariners to one hit in the Blue Jays' 2-0 win on Sunday. That marks the first time the Blue Jays won a game in which they scored two or fewer runs since they defeated the Yankees, 2-0, on Aug. 9, 2015, the Elias Sports Bureau reports.

Stats & Info

Sunday's longest home runs

Trevor Story's post-break homer binge continued on Sunday, as the rookie launched a career-long 456-foot blast to pace the competition. Story has six homers in his last seven games.

J.A. Happ with 6 one-hit shutout innings today vs. a Mariners team that scored 14 runs yesterday. Since the first week of last August, he's 20-4 in 30 starts, with a 2.66 ERA. One of the best signings of the winter.

Blue Jays designate RHP Storen for assignment

Drew Storen has been designated for assignment by the Blue Jays, who in a corresponding move recalled right-hander Ryan Tepera from Triple-A Buffalo.

Tough day for R.A. Dickey as he's out after 3+ innings, his shortest outing of the season, and leaves with bases loaded and down 5-1. He also had some bad luck: Two infield tricklers that went for hits, a bad throw by Justin Smoak on a double play ball, and a liner off Troy Tulowitzki's glove that should have been caught.

Nelson Cruz loves hitting against the Blue Jays and he crushes an R.A. Dickey knuckleball over the center-field fence for a grand slam. Dickey got himself in trouble by hitting two batters to load the bases.

Lineup: Blue Jays (54-43) vs. Mariners (49-47)

  • 1. Ezequiel Carrera, RF (L)
  • 2. Josh Donaldson, 3B (R)
  • 3. Edwin Encarnacion, DH (R)
  • 4. Michael Saunders, LF (L)
  • 5. Troy Tulowitzki, SS (R)
  • 6. Justin Smoak, 1B (S)
  • 7. Kevin Pillar, CF (R)
  • 8. Devon Travis, 2B (R)
  • 9. Josh Thole, C (L)
  • SP: R.A. Dickey, RHP

Blue Jays struggle in one-run games

The Blue Jays lost 2-1 on Friday night and are now an MLB-worst 9-18 (.333) this season in one-run games. Toronto also had the worst record in one-run games in 2015 at 15-28 (.349). The most recent team to post the majors' worst record in one-run games in consecutive seasons did so 60 years ago -- the 1955-56 Tigers, per the Elias Sports Bureau.

All-Time #MLBRank: No. 19 Roger Clemens

The Rocket became the first pitcher to strike out 20 batters in a nine-inning game and is the only one to do so twice. He won a record seven Cy Young awards and is one of five players to win the award in both leagues. His 4,672 strikeouts are the third-most of all time. Nos. 20-11

Blue Jays' deadline status: buyers

The Jays' objectives include a left-handed reliever, a starting pitcher for when they move Aaron Sanchez to the bullpen and speed, Jim Bowden writes. Just don't expect them to wheel and deal like they did last year. Trade deadline objectives (Insider)
