Can Nats capitalize on back-to-back picks?

In his latest mock draft, Keith Law now believes Washington will select high school SS Drew Mendoza with the No. 28 pick and Georgia righty Robert Tyler with the No. 29 pick. Mendoza is a high-risk, high-reward power hitter. Meanwhile, Tyler's fastball is in the upper 90s. Law: Mock draft 2.0 (Insider)

Harper rediscovers his power stroke

Two days after hitting a season-long 437-foot home run against the Cardinals, Bryce Harper was at it again on Saturday. His solo shot off Adam Wainwright traveled 428 feet, per ESPN's Home Run Tracker.

Adam Wainwright was delighted to talk about his hitting, which has been impressive this season. After his two-run double off Gio Gonzalez in the second inning Saturday, he leads all MLB pitchers -- even Madison Bumgarner -- with five extra-base hits this season. Wainwright also is the active leader among pitchers in hits (109) and doubles (29).

Adam Wainwright and Mike Leake have been exchanging trash talk about their hitting since the team's Winter Warmup fan event in January. They wouldn't reveal the stakes, but they also have something riding on who finishes the season with superior numbers. Wainwright figures to collect on that wager as Leake is just 2-for-17 with a double. Wainwright, meanwhile, hit his third double, driving in two runs, in the second inning off Gio Gonzalez. He also has a triple and a home run and is 5-for-17 overall.

When Daniel Murphy hit a shallow fly ball to right field and Stephen Piscotty couldn't make a diving catch on it, Murphy had his 41st base hit of May. That set a new Washington Nationals record for hits in any calendar month.

Max Scherzer allowed a grand slam to Stephen Piscotty, just the second salami he's given up in his career, and the first since 2010. He also walked four, tied for his most since coming to DC last season. Add it all up, and the #Nats fell 6-2 to St. Louis. If the #Mets hold on against the Dodgers, there'll be a tie atop the NL East.

Piscotty, Cardinals slam Scherzer, Nationals 6-2

Stephen Piscotty hit a grand slam off Max Scherzer during a five-run third inning and Jaime Garcia quieted the Washington Nationals lineup as the St. Louis Cardinals won 6-2 on Friday night.

Cardinals manager Mike Matheny wasn't too happy after umpire Alan Porter issued warnings following a brush-back pitch from Cardinals left-hander Jaime Garcia to the Nationals' Ben Revere in the fifth inning. That pitch came an inning after Garcia hit Daniel Murphy in the upper part of his left shoulder with a pitch and immediately after Danny Espinosa took Garcia deep. Porter apparently thought there was intent.
