Espinosa's grand slam busts game wide open (0:33)

It's only the fourth inning, and already Danny Espinosa has two curtain calls. Which is the same number of home runs he has tonight. After hitting a salami right-handed in the third, the Washington shortstop laced a three-run opposite-field shot as a lefty in the fourth to give Washington a 13-1 lead. His 7 RBI's ties a Nars record.

After sweeping the Mets, the Nationals are showing no let-down against the lowly Reds. Danny Espinosa just got a curtain-call after hitting a third-inning grand slam that put the Nats up 8-1. It's the second salami of Espinosa's career, and the first since 9/6/10, when he hit one in his very first game at Nats Park.

Coming into today, slumping Nats first baseman Ryan Zimmerman was 6 for his last 38 with no home runs. Make that 7-for-39 with one homer. Zimmerman just demolished a Brandon Finnegan sinker and parked it well beyond the wall in dead center. Nats lead the Reds 4-1 after one.

Almost as impressive as the 4 frames of 1-hit ball that Lucas Giolito tossed in his Nats debut on Tuesday was the fact the 21-year old righty - who had whiffed in 6 of his 8 minor league at bats this year - managed to make contact in his lone AB against Matt Harvey (groundout). Giolito's next turn would be Sunday, but Dusty Baker still hasn't decided between him and Stephen Strasburg, who's eligible to come off the DL on Friday. Both pitchers threw bullpen sessions today, and both took BP. For the record, Strasburg outhomered Giolito 4-1 in the few rounds that I watched.

No Bryce Harper in the lineup tonight. Wilson Ramos moves up to cleanup, though.

Murphy latest to haunt Mets with homers

  • Frank Thomas with the Astros in 1965

Mets manager Terry Collins on what Daniel Murphy has done against his former team: "He's doing damage against everybody!"

Eddie Matz ESPN Senior Writer

Two Daniel Murphy bombs and another Max Scherzer gem helped the Nats to a 4-2 victory and a sweep of the Mets – you know, the team that was supposed to be Washington's foil but instead is falling apart faster than a homemade burrito. With a 5.5-game division lead and seven straight home dates with the Reds and Brewers (followed by four more against these same Mets), a double-digit cushion by the All-Star break doesn't seem out of the question.

Eddie Matz ESPN Senior Writer

With his second jack of the game and 14th of the season, Daniel Murphy just tied his career high in homers - in June. Since leaving the Mets, the Nats slugger has a 1.229 OPS against his former team.
