Five things we learned Monday

On Monday, we learned that the Chicago Cubs were human, Yoenis Cespedes and Clayton Kershaw might not be, while two old dogs still have some bite.

Mets rough up Nationals (0:55)

Five days ago, Gio Gonzalez outpitched Bartolo Colon in the Nationals 7-1 road victory over the Mets. Tonight was a 180, as Colon lifted the Mets to a 7-1 road win over Gonzalez and the Nats. With the loss, Washington's NL East lead over the Mets is trimmed to a half-game.

Cespedes crushes 15th homer of season (0:20)

The Nationals are averaging an MLB-high 101 pitches per outing. One reason is Gio Gonzalez, who last year worked into the seventh inning just 10 times in 31 starts. This season, he's done it four times in eight outings. "It's like that kid that climbs up in the tree," said skipper Dusty Baker. "If you send the fire department out to take him down from that tree, he'll never learn how to get out of the tree. If you rescue 'em every time that they're in trouble, then they'll never know how to get out of trouble on their own."

As a general rule, Bryce Harper doesn't take batting practice on the field. Today was an exception.

The Mets are rolling out the same lineup against Gio Gonzalez as they did on May 18; Gonzalez threw 6 1/3 innings of one-run, five-hit baseball then. Another good matchup opportunity in daily.

Nats rebound in rankings

Thanks to its strong starting rotation -- where Max Scherzer has the worst ERA of the five at 3.80 -- Washington has re-entered the top three in our rankings after a drop to No. 4 last week. Week 7 Power Rankings

Daniel Murphy: Best. Plan B. Ever.

As crucial as Daniel Murphy has been to the Nationals' early success, it's easy to forget that a guy hitting .387 wasn't their first choice at second.

Harvey to stay in rotation, make start next week
