Power Rankings: Featherweight
Saturday, Jan. 19
Bellator wanted to kick off their new era on Spike with a bang, so what did they do? They threw Pat Curran in there to get things started, and the 25-year-old featherweight champion delivered. Curran has won nine of his last 10 fights. His one loss in that span was in a lightweight title tilt against former lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez (who is now locked in a custody battle between the UFC and Bellator). What has become apparent now is that Curran was a very good 155-pounder who is now a fairly great featherweight. He has defeated a very nice list of feathers who have at one time or another graced the Power Rankings -- names like Marlon Sandro, Joe Warren and Patricio Freire. Sure, it was a narrow victory against the ever-tough "Pitbull" (a split decision), but Curran showed his hands and his mettle. He is one of the bright stars that Bellator can build around in its updated form, and his upcoming fight with Daniel Straus should be a good one.
