MMA Power Rankings -- Heavyweight
Tuesday, Nov. 1
As we close in on the biggest heavyweight fight in UFC history -- the showdown between Junior dos Santos and Cain Velasquez on FOX on Nov. 12 -- the heavyweight division is fairly black and white. There's Velasquez at the top, who is 9-0 and coming off of one-sided destructions of Brock Lesnar and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira. Then there's dos Santos, who is 13-1 and riding an eight-fight winning streak. This is a true No. 1 versus No. 2 conflict that will be resolved in front of millions.
The next best in the division are former UFC champion Brock Lesnar and reigning Strikeforce champion Alistair Overeem. They collide on Dec. 30 at UFC 141, two caricaturized heavyweights battling in a title eliminator. While Lesnar's health remains an issue heading in, there's also the question of how Overeem will handle himself against the game's elite talent. We find out at the end of the year, in what might be the biggest pay-per-view event since UFC 100. Behind those four there's Daniel Cormier and Josh Barnett, whom are set to battle at some point in early 2012 to decide the Strikeforce heavyweight grand prix championship. They are the formidable lurkers.
As for the rest, Frank Mir and Nogueira are set to rematch at UFC 140 in Toronto, and Fabricio Werdum could be UFC bound for a fight with the recently fallen Brendan Schaub. In the next two months things could get very interesting in the heavyweight division. Stay tuned.
