Power Rankings: Heavyweight
Monday, Dec. 31
What can you say about Cain Velasquez? The guy did everything we thought he was capable of doing, but he did it against a guy that we were not certain he'd be able to do it against. Velasquez used his wrestling throughout a grueling five-round war with Junior dos Santos, and in the end won the stand-up war because of it. Well-rounded mixed martial artists? No doubt about it. And nobody will question either man's chin, either. In defeat, Dos Santos took a lot of punishment -- including a big overhand right in the first round that would have knocked out a horse -- but hung on the entire fight. It was a great show of heart from both men, and the future seems clear at this point -- there will be a trilogy fight between these two. What could be better? Dos Santos cedes the No. 1 spot in this week's power rankings, but he doesn't fall far. Meanwhile, look out for the healthy Velasquez.
