Power Rankings: Middleweight
Wednesday, July 9
How can Anderson Silva remain ranked on the pound-for-pound list, yet fall to No. 6 in the middleweight division? It's a question posed a lot when it comes to rankings -- a fair one, by the way. The answer is that divisional rankings are about moving pieces relative to the title, whereas pound-for-pound rankings are based more on overall level of talent. In other words, think of divisional rankings as "standings." Silva, coming off back-to-back losses, shouldn't be ranked ahead of Vitor Belfort, who is on a streak of three quality knockout wins. Pound-for-pound, however, one can still argue Silva is better than Belfort.
