Jose Aldo set for Calgary card
Jose Aldo will defend his UFC featherweight title at a newly announced July 21 event in Calgary, the promotion announced at a news conference Wednesday.
The UFC 149 card will take place at the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary. Aldo is the only fighter confirmed on the card so far.
In addition, the promotion announced two more cards to take place in Canada in 2012. UFC 152 will take place on Sept. 22 in Toronto and UFC 154 will be held in Montreal on Nov. 17.
UFC president Dana White went on to say the promotion intends to host multiple cards in Canada during the next three years. Director of Canadian operations Tom Wright referred to the cities of Toronto and Montreal as "fixtures" on the UFC calendar.
Welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre attended the press conference via satellite to announce the Nov. 17 card in Montreal.
The Canadian fighter hasn't fought since April 2011 due to ACL surgery, but is a candidate to headline the show in November.
"My rehab is going very well," St. Pierre said. "The doctor says it is the fastest rehab they have ever seen from ACL surgery.
"I'll be training full out in July and hopefully I'll have a chance to fight in front of my Canadian fans in November. Dana is the boss. He's the one who decides everything but I will cross my fingers that it will happen."
One Canadian city left off Wednesday's announcements is Vancouver, which hosted UFC events in 2011 and 2010 during a two-year "test period" by the city council to sanction MMA.
The city was left off the 2012 calendar and, according to White, likely won't land another show within the next two years.
