Jon Jones-Dan Henderson in offing

UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones is likely to make his next title defense this fall against Dan Henderson, promotion president Dana White said.

"We're thinking early September," White said on Thursday during a news conference in New York to promote UFC on Fox 3, which will be held Saturday in East Rutherford, N.J.

White did not specify an exact date or venue for the bout.

Jones (16-1) will make his fourth defense of the title he claimed from Mauricio Rua on March 19, 2011, with a third-round TKO.

In his most recent outing, Jones beat former champion and teammate Rashad Evans by unanimous decision. That fight was held April 21 in Atlanta at UFC 145.

If the fight with Jones goes off in September, Henderson will have been out of action for 10 months. His last bout took place Nov. 19 at UFC 139 in San Jose, Calif., against Rua.

In a hard-fought battle, Henderson defeated Rua by unanimous decision.

Henderson, who held the Pride middleweight (205 pounds) and welterweight (183 pounds) titles, has a professional mark of 29-8. He held the Strikeforce light heavyweight championship belt in 2011 before vacating it to return to UFC.

"Henderson's small but I give him the credit he deserves," White said. "He's got a great chin, power and good wrestling. He's tough."
