The Toronto-based Office of the Athletics Commissioner has issued 60-day medical suspensions to UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones and top contender Alexander Gustafsson.
Jones suffered a cut above his right eye and a busted lip, while Gustafsson was cut on top of his head during Saturday's title fight. Both badly bruised fighters were taken to a Toronto hospital immediately after the bout, and neither attended the UFC 165 post-fight news conference.
Each fighter must undergo a CT scan and MRI before being cleared to compete again.
Jones retained his 205-pound title by unanimous decision. Two of the judges, Richard Bertrand and Doug Crosby, had Jones winning 48-47, while Chris Lee scored it 49-46.
After the fight, the Internet was abuzz with requests for a rematch. UFC officials have yet to decide whether they will offer Gustafsson an immediate rematch or give Glover Teixeira the next crack at Jones.
Both Gustafsson and Teixeira have publicly expressed their desire to be Jones' next challenger.
Before Jones and Gustafsson stepped inside the Octagon at Air Canada Centre, it was commonly believed that Teixeira would face the winner. Teixeira put himself at the top of UFC's light heavyweight contender list on Sept. 4 when he registered an opening-round knockout of Ryan Bader.
If UFC officials opt for a rematch, however, Jones would be favored to again retain his title. Online oddsmaker BovadaLV has Jones listed as an early favorite at minus-450; Gustafsson is a plus-325 underdog.
