Waipahu, Saudi Arabia, Fort Worth win openers

Associated Press

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. -- Travis Jones wasn't looking for a game-winner when he swung at his fourth pitch in the bottom of the sixth. He got one anyway.

Jones bounced a home run off the top of the wall in left-center field to lift Waipahu, Hawaii, to a 3-2 victory over Worcester, Mass., in the opening game of the Little League World Series on Friday.

With one out and an 0-2 count, Jones fouled off his third pitch, then sent the fourth deep into left-center field. It bounced on the yellow padding atop the wall, then fell over for a home run.

"It just looked like any other pitch,'' Jones said. "I just swung at it.''

But the big-play heroics weren't a surprise to Waipahu (1-0) manager Clyde Tanabe, who said Jones has made a habit out of making big plays.

"Travis has been doing it all year long,'' the manager said. "He comes up big in big games.''

Worcester's manager did not come to the postgame news conference.

Also Friday, Brendon Baker scored on a passed ball in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, a 3-2 victory over Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada. In Friday's final game, Fort Worth, Texas, defeated Webb City, Mo., 1-0.

Worcester (0-1) tied the game in the fifth when Keith Landers' bases-loaded chopper drove in Kurt Sabacinksi. Micah Golshirazian, pinch running for Ben Landers, scored the first run on Gordie Lockbaum's line-drive double to right field.

"When you're pitching, you can't let that affect you,'' said Kurt Tanabe, who came back by throwing three strikeouts in the top of the sixth.

Waipahu had not yet put a man on base when Tanabe, leading off in the fourth, swung away with a 1-2 count, sending the ball clean over the center field wall and giving Hawaii a 1-0 lead. Isaac Moises followed that with a single, then advanced to second on an error. Cory Yuh's grounder up the center field gap brought Moises home.

Tanabe (1-0) had 12 strikeouts and gave up just three hits in earning the win. Frank Flynn (0-1) took the loss.

Tanabe walked two to open the third inning, but put the next two batters out on a fly and a strikeout. Golshirazian, pinch running for Landers, rounded third on a wild pitch, but was tagged out trying to reach home, ending the side.

Waipahu's shortstop, Kelsey Outram, left the game in the second inning after a pitch hit his left hand. Little League spokesman Lance Van Auken said there was some bruising, and Outram was taken to a hospital for X-rays.

Fort Worth 1, Webb City 0
SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. -- Mitchell Belew hit an RBI single in the top of the sixth to lift Fort Worth, Texas, to a 1-0 victory Friday night over Webb City, Mo., at the Little League World Series.

Michael "Mikey'' Valdez reached second base on a fly ball to the warning track in right-center field, then rounded the bases on Belew's hit, scoring the first run of the game for Fort Worth (1-0).

Walker Kelly (1-0) gave up his only hit to Dakotah Miller, Webb City's leadoff batter, in the bottom of the sixth, but struck out three the next three to preserve the win. Darren Aggus (0-1) took the loss for Webb City (0-1).

Fort Worth had runners on first and second in the top of the fifth, but they were stranded when Kelly grounded to the shortstop to end the side. It was the second time the Southwest Region champion had failed to convert with runners in scoring position. In the third inning runners on second and third were stranded on a groundout to third base.

Fort Worth will play Hawaii at 3 p.m. Sunday at Lamade Stadium.

Saudi Arabia 3, Canada 2
Brendon Baker scored on a passed ball in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Saudi Arabia a 3-2 victory over Regina, Saskatchewan.

Baker walked to open the bottom of the seventh and advanced to third on successive wild pitches by losing pitcher Shawn Wilyman.

Colin Gallacher struck out, however, and the ball deflected off catcher Corey Dawson's glove, allowing Saudi Arabia to win 3-2 over Canada.

Craig Lumpa led the winners with two singles.
