We expected better: Top 25 of unfulfilled potential

ESPN.com presents the top 25 cases of unfulfilled potential in sports history. Some of the athletes who made the list squandered their prodigious talent; others were slowed or stopped by injury. All left us wanting more.

Pacers assistant Nate McMillan and ex-Pacers aide Brian Shaw are two of the first names you hear in terms of coaches to replace Frank Vogel

Mike Mazzeo ESPN Staff Writer

Nets announce staff additions with former judicial law clerk Natalie Jay becoming a cap specialist and ex-Net Sheldon Williams being named a pro scout.

Michael Wallace ESPN Staff Writer

Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said after today's shootaround that it's good to get some level of clarity in the Chris Bosh situation. Bosh and the team released a statement confirming that he won't return for the playoffs, but the sides will continue to work together to resume his career as soon as possible.

Mike Wells ESPN Staff Writer

It's interesting that Larry Bird told Frank Vogel about his decision not to renew his contract over the phone. He let Rick Carlisle (2007) and Jim O'Brien (2001) go in person. Carlisle and Bird sat and talked for a while after he let him go. O'Brien was with Bird when he called Vogel in 2011 to let him know that he was being named interim coach.

Frank Vogel will get an NBA job shortly but given level of coaching in league, he'd be terrific at Top 10 college job if he waited.

Marc Stein @ESPNSteinLine

The Wizards, meanwhile, just announced star guard John Wall underwent minor procedures on both knees today as part of his trip to Cleveland

Mike Wells ESPN Staff Writer

Larry Bird said owner Herb Simon is willing to pay top dollar for the next head coach. Bird said he'll probably see some candidates next week in Chicago during the NBA's predraft camp.

Marc Stein @ESPNSteinLine

Though expected it's still jarring to hear Indiana is parting ways with Frank Vogel, who now becomes a target for Houston and maybe others

Jeff Goodman @GoodmanESPN

You'd think Frank Vogel is too smart to touch Sacramento Kings job, even the Rockets mess. Do TV for a year, get a better job next year.

Ian Begley ESPN Staff Writer

It's unclear at this point if the Knicks will have interest in Frank Vogel, whose contract has not been renewed by the Pacers. Worth noting here: Vogel worked as an advance scout for Jackson and the Lakers in 2006. Jackson has said he'd "probably" limit his coaching interviews to people he knows. Theoretically, Vogel fits this description.

Jeff Goodman @GoodmanESPN

Still surprised Larry Bird canned Frank Vogel. Thought he did a pretty good job with what he had to work with personnel-wise.

Mike Wells ESPN Staff Writer

Pacers coach Larry Bird said former Boston Celtics teammate Kevin McHale will not be a candidate for the job. "I would not do that to Kevin, have him work for me. Would love for him to be my coach, but it's not going to happen."
