Here's the Lowe-down: Win now, Sidney

By Frank Hughes

SEATTLE -- Here are five observations of the Memphis Grizzlies from a preseason game against the Sonics:

Sidney Lowe
Lowe isn't Jerry West's guy. But Mike Dunleavy might be.
1. Sidney Lowe's time as the Grizzlies' coach is likely drawing to a close. His first offense is that he was not hired by Jerry West. That makes it difficult for West to express to him what it is he wants -- a two different sides of the tracks sort of thing. If the Grizzlies start off the season slowly and do not look as if they are developing -- and in West's mind that means winning -- Lowe could be gone before 2003. West and Mike Dunleavy are close, and Dunleavy is currently unemployed.

2. Drew Gooden has become a top three candidate for Rookie of the Year. He is one of those guys who always seems to be around the ball. He has a lot to learn, which you could see Monday night, when he could not pass out of a double-team. But he also has a lot of talent, which is how he amassed 14 points and 10 rebounds against the Sonics.

3. Stromile Swift may be the most frustrating player in the league. It's one thing to be Greg Ostertag and not work hard, because he was only going to be so good anyway. It's completely another thing to have the ability that Swift has and not work hard, because that is, simply put, wasting talent. The guy can run the floor and jump like mad, but he is not a very smart player. And those guys tend to find themselves traded before too long.

4. The Grizzlies would have a nice little one-two punch at shooting guard with Gordan Giricek and Michael Dickerson -- if Dickerson ever could get healthy. He missed almost all of last season with a groin injury and now has played only one preseason game because of back spasms.

5. What West plans to do with Jason Williams will be interesting. He clearly is the team's starter at point guard, but he also goes against what West stands for. Brevin Knight's contract is up soon, and word is the next draft is point guard deep. Plus, West went out and got Earl Watson in the offseason. Will White Chocolate ever be more than just a sideshow?
