Camp question
With Jason Kidd being able to opt out of his contract in July 2003 -- and already saying he will test free-agent waters -- can the Nets re-sign their top player long-term? An ominous sign: Kidd came out last week and said the Nets are his No. 1 choice. But when asked if that meant he'd sign a deal with New Jersey right now, he said, "no."
Camp project
The Nets will see how Richard Jefferson does as a first-year starter at small forward. He had a banner rookie season off the bench last season, but now he has to replace Keith Van Horn in the starting lineup. That's a major step for a young player, who doesn't have Van Horn's shooting range but is more athletic.

FANTASY GAMES KEY CAMPER
|
|

Who to watch: Goodbye Keith Van Horn, hello Richard Jefferson. While Jefferson contributed as a rookie last year, now he's starting and the potential of a 15-point scoring average is there. Of course, Jefferson does need a good preseason. Newcomer Rodney Rogers could usurp his spot and make Jefferson a sixth man again. — Eric Karabell

Camp comeback
How will Dikembe Mutombo do in his first season in Jersey? He'll no doubt help improve one of the NBA's top defenses and continue to help the Nets be one of the better rebounding teams. He's the only player to ever win Defensive Player of the Year four times. But he has a history of bogging down his own team's halfcourt offense. He's not a very good passer, and his hands are made of cinder blocks. ESPN's David Aldridge says Mutombo will need to reinvent his offensive game in New Jersey.
Camp controversy
The Nets don't have a key position battle, although new signee Rodney Rogers has stated he'd love to start at either forward spot. Forget it. Byron Scott is committed to Kenyon Martin and Richard Jefferson as his starting forwards.
