Payton is preseason NBA top guard

He may not get the national attention that some of the other guards playing in bigger markets get, but Seattle's Gary's Payton is a fan favorite.

ESPN.com users voted Payton will be this season's best guard over the likes of Kobe Bryant, Jason Kidd and Vince Carter. That has got to mean something.

Check out the stats for each candidate from last season and the ESPN.com poll results.

Pretty close to averaging a triple-double last season. With Googs and Penny out with injuries, it's his team now.

If he can get his team deep into the playoffs, he might finally get the respect he deserves.

Steve Francis, Rockets
PPG REB ASST 3PT%

Burst on the scene last season and captured co-Rookie of the Year. What can he do as a follow up?

Vince Carter, Raptors

His all-around game needs work, but there is no question about his athleticism.

Kobe Bryant, Lakers
