Shaq worried about anti-inflammatories

LOS ANGELES -- Shaquille O'Neal suspects that the disease that threatens Alonzo Mourning's life might be the result of the Heat center's use of anti-inflammatories, the Los Angeles Daily News reported in its Tuesday editions.

For that reason, O'Neal said he fears suffering a kidney ailment similar to the one that has forced Mourning to the sidelines for the season.

"Put it this way, I'm scared to take that kidney test that he took," O'Neal told the News, "because I've been taking Indocin (a popular anti-inflammatory) ever since 1993. And I'm (expletive) scared to take that test. So my heart goes out to Zo."

Mourning's doctors say drugs are not to blame for his ailment.

But O'Neal stands by his theory: "It's sad," O'Neal said of Mourning. "I blame that on the NBA -- the rigorous schedule and the beatings us big guys have to take. You gotta take anti-inflammatories. You take too much of that (stuff), it will (mess) your kidney up. I'm telling you, that's what happened."
