Duncan out vs. Mavericks while Ginobili able to play

SAN ANTONIO (AP) -- Tim Duncan sat out the San Antonio Spurs' game against the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday night because of a sprained right ankle.

Duncan's absence was expected because of the injury he sustained Sunday, while Manu Ginobili started for the first time this season after being a game-time decision.

"He wants to play, he's very adamant, when a player is that adamant, he's probably ready to go," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said before the game.

Ginobili went on to score a season-high 37 points, including 16 in the third quarter, in the Spurs' 97-95 win over the Mavericks.

Popovich said Duncan would be 50-50 for Friday's game against the Utah Jazz and will probably be able to play after that.

For the Mavericks, Devean George (left foot) and Eddie Jones (sore right leg) were still out.
