Clippers Survive Sloppy Foul Shooting
From Elias: The Clippers, leading 86-80 with 15 seconds to play in the fourth quarter, survived a pair of Rudy Gay three-pointers and five of their own missed free throws, taking Game Three from the Grizzlies, 87-86, as Gay's potential game-winning three-pointer clanged off the rim at the buzzer. Eric Bledsoe and Reggie Evans combined to miss the Clippers' last five free-throw attempts, starting with 12 seconds left to play. It was the first time that an NBA team had missed five free-throw attempts in the last 20 seconds of a playoff game since Miami's P.J. Brown and Tim Hardaway did that against the Knicks in Game Three of a first-round series in 1998 (and like the Clippers on Saturday, the Heat survived those misses to win the game). For the game as a whole, the Clippers made only 13 of 30 free-throw attempts; their resulting free-throw percentage of 43.3 percent is the lowest free-throw percentage in an NBA playoff game in the shot-clock era by a team that had at least 30 attempts. The previous record low in that category: 44.4 percent (16 for 36) by Wilt Chamberlain's 76ers against the San Francisco Warriors in Game Two of the 1967 NBA Finals - a game that the 76ers won by a 31-point margin. (We note that in a 1960 playoff game against the Celtics, Wilt's Philadelphia Warriors made only six of 23 free-throw attempts - that's 26.1 percent - which is the NBA record for the lowest free-throw percentage by a team in any playoff game, regardless of the number of attempts.)
