Power Rankings: Mavs, Spurs battle for Western supremacy

It's getting tougher and tougher to imagine a scenario in which the Detroit Pistons are dislodged from the top spot in ESPN.com's weekly NBA Power Rankings.

All we know for sure is that the only two teams with a chance are based in Texas.

With the Pistons extending their hold on the No. 1 slot to 12 consecutive weeks, there isn't a bigger source of intrigue in the upper reaches of the rankings than the battle between Southwest Division rivals Dallas and San Antonio, both of whom sit at 34-10.

The Mavericks seized the No. 2 spot from the Spurs last week and retained it by completing a franchise-record 5-0 road trip. Yet San Antonio is about to embark on the annual rodeo-enforced road trip -- eight consecutive away games starting Monday at Utah -- that typically gets the Spurs rolling toward playoff form. Let's see how the Spurs respond to Dallas' recent road excellence as they battle for home-court advantage in their inevitable, unavoidable showdown in the second round of the playoffs.
