Power Rankings: Suns take over top spot from Mavs thanks to streak
That should make it pretty clear why the Dallas Mavericks, after just their second loss in 24 games, are down to No. 2 in the ESPN.com NBA Power Rankings for the first time in 2007.
Phoenix used a 4-0 week on the road and the Mavericks' defeat Thursday at Chicago to rise into the top spot. The Suns' ridiculous 33-2 run since Nov. 18 offsets their two head-to-head losses to the Mavs on this scorecard because it's a period of extended domination exceeded only by the Lakers going 34-1 in 1971-92 -- the team that won a league-record 33 consecutive games -- and matched by two other NBA champions coached by Phil Jackson: Chicago had a 33-2 stretch in its 72-10 season in 1995-96, as did the 67-15 Lakers in 1999-2000.
