SEATTLE (AP) -- The Los Angeles Clippers couldn't stop Gary Payton in the fourth quarter.

Seattle's Gary Payton drives around Jeff McInnis of the Clippers on his way to 43 points on 18-for-27 shooting, eight rebounds and no turnovers.

Payton scored 20 of his season-high 43 points in the final period as the Seattle SuperSonics beat the Clippers 101-90 Thursday night for their fifth consecutive victory.

He shot 8-for-11 from the field in the quarter, and scored 20 of his team's 34 points in the period.

"It was just an unbelievable fourth quarter by him," Sonics coach Nate McMillan said. "Taking over, reading situations and putting the game away."

The Sonics were leading 85-81 with 4:01 left when Payton scored three consecutive baskets on nifty baseline moves to make it 93-83 with 2:11 left.

As the clock wound down, the 14,129 fans were on their feet chanting "Gary, Gary," as they cheered for Payton to score one more basket.

He had two chances to take a shot and surpass his career high of 44, but passed the ball both times.

"It was good the fans were into it, but I'm not really into all that stuff," Payton said. "It was great to hear."

He shot 18-for-27 in 45 minutes, had six assists, eight rebounds and no turnovers.

"Our offense was struggling a little bit and they started calling some plays for me," Payton said. "I knew I could do some things against them."

The Sonics (15-15) reached for the .500 mark for the first time since Nov. 27, when they were 8-8.

"We decided about two weeks ago that we wanted to be .500 before the start of the new year," Payton said. "We have to keep it going against Toronto."

Rashard Lewis added 16 points for the Sonics, who beat the Clippers for the 16th time in their last 17 meetings in Seattle.

Corey Maggette led the Clippers with 25 points, and Jeff McInnis added 20 and Elton Brand 16.

Brent Barry, Payton's backcourt mate, said it was fun to watch Payton take over.

"One play can turn the tide in the game and Gary made about 10 of them," Barry said. "So the tide was definitely flowing for us."

Lewis broke a 73-73 tie with a 3-pointer with 6:30 left, and he added another basket on a runner. He tipped away a pass that led to another basket and an 80-75 lead.

Maggette was one of several Clippers who tried to slow down Payton.

"Gary played great and great players do what they have to win," Maggette said. "And he did it all tonight."

The Sonics led 67-65 after three quarters, but Seattle outscored the Clippers 34-25 in the final quarter.

Down 53-47 early in the third period, the Sonics scored 10 consecutive points for a 57-53 lead with 6:52 left in the third period. Desmond Mason tied it with a two-handed jam after stealing the ball and driving in from midcourt.

Sean Rooks' basket gave the Clippers a 49-47 halftime lead. Los Angeles shot 21-for-21 from the free-throw line in the first half, including 13-for-13 in the second quarter.

    Game notes
Clippers forward Lamar Odom missed the game after spraining a wrist Wednesday against Philadelphia. ... Lewis missed the last 7:33 of the first half after getting elbowed in the upper lip by Maggette. He returned with 3:03 left in the third period after getting eight stitches to close the cut. ... The Clippers are 1-7 on their road trip. Their only victory away from the Staples Center was at Phoenix on Dec. 18.
