Sonics send 76ers to first loss at home (10-1)

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Might have been the best timeout Nate McMillan never called.

With the Seattle Supersonics trailing by two Wednesday night, Gary Payton missed a shot with 26 seconds left and Desmond Mason grabbed an offensive rebound.

McMillan seemed to be calling for a timeout, but Mason found Brent Barry for a 3-pointer with 23 seconds remaining as the Sonics held on for a 92-88 win over Philadelphia, snapping the 76ers' 10-game home winning streak.

"Good thing we didn't call it,'' said Payton, who made two foul shots with nine seconds left to push the lead to three. "Brent's our best shooter, that's what he's here for. We were very comfortable with him shooting.''

"Coach was calling a timeout, but I don't think anyone heard him,'' said Barry, who has won two other games this season with 3s in the final seconds. "We could have had the timeout or taken a one-point lead, we got the one-point lead. I think we'll take it.''

The Sonics trailed by as many as 17 in the second quarter and did not lead until Payton capped a 15-5 run with an 18-footer to put Seattle ahead 82-81 with 4:21 left.

Derrick Coleman made one of two free throws with 1:28 left to give Philadelphia an 88-86 lead. After each team missed, Barry's 3 put the Sonics up one. Payton's two free throws made it a three-point advantage, and Coleman missed a deep three from the corner.

Ansu Sesay got the rebound and made one of two free throws to clinch the win.

Payton and Rashard Lewis each scored 20 points, Barry had 18 and Vladimir Radmanovic came off the bench to score 11 for the Sonics, who held the Sixers to 9-of-34 shooting in the second half.

Allen Iverson had 26 points, Keith Van Horn scored 24 and Eric Snow had 13 points, eight rebounds and eight assists for the Sixers, who have lost three in a row after winning eight straight.

Philadelphia had the first four points of the fourth quarter before the Sonics scored 15 of the next 18 to take their first lead. Philadelphia missed its last 10 shots of the quarter.

Paced by 21 points from Van Horn, who was 8-of-10 from the field, the 76ers led 60-48 at halftime. Philadelphia led by as many as 17 in the second quarter. The Sixers shot 24-of-38 (63 percent) from the field in the half and were 7-of-8 from beyond the 3-point arc.

"We played well and got a lead, then let everything fall apart,'' Iverson said. "We've got to play hard all the time or this is what will happen.''
