Yao gets career-high 17 boards in defeat

HOUSTON (AP) -- Troy Murphy and Earl Boykins were so unhappy with the way they played the previous night, they took it out on the Houston Rockets.

Murphy finished one point short of his career high with 23, and Boykins had 12 -- including seven in the fourth quarter and the go-ahead shot with 53 seconds to play -- as Golden State held off Houston 86-84 Saturday night.

One night earlier at San Antonio, Murphy got in early foul trouble and played only 20 minutes, scoring eight points, while Boykins had nine points but missed some key late shots.

"I just felt like last night it was a close game and I didn't step up,'' Boykins said. "So I felt like I had to make up for it tonight. I was able to step up and deliver tonight.''

    So did Murphy.

"I just tried to be active and take the ball to the basket when I had chances,'' he said. "I had a lot of energy because I didn't play much last night because of foul trouble. So I felt good and played as hard as I could tonight.''

Coach Eric Musselman also liked the job his centers, Erick Dampier and Adonal Foyle, did on the Rockets' Yao Ming, who had only six points.

"We did a good job of defending tonight,'' Musselman said.

The Rockets couldn't believe they lost to a team they had beaten 33 of the last 40 times they met.

"I don't know what it is with teams we should beat,'' Mobley said. "For some reason, we don't play as intense as we should. The beginning of the game, they had us down by 10 and there's no way that should happen. Every single time we play teams like this, this happens.''

    Coach Rudy Tomjanovich agreed.

"This was a very disappointing loss,'' Tomjanovich said. "I thought we worked hard. We did a great job on the boards. We just could not get the ball to go down.

"The standards are so high now that when you have these lows, it causes your game to dip. I have to give them credit. Every time we got an emotional lift, they bounced right back and came up with the big play.''

Mobley had 27 points and Steve Francis 15 for Houston. Yao had a career-high 17 rebounds and missed a 3-pointer that replays later showed came after the final buzzer.

Houston started the game sluggishly, committing five turnovers and missing its first five shots to fall behind 8-0. After a timeout, the Rockets went on an 8-2 run to get back in the game.

Houston tied the game twice before Golden State settled for a 26-22 lead at the end of the quarter behind eight points apiece from Murphy and Jason Richardson.

Boykins' five points keyed an 11-3 run that gave Golden State its biggest lead of the half, 46-37 with 2:55 left before intermission.

Mobley had 15 at the half and scored 10 more as the Rockets took their first lead, 62-61 with 4:46 to play in the third quarter. Mobley had 12 in the period but Murphy had eight as Golden State was ahead 69-66 after three.

    Game notes

The Rockets have held six teams to fewer than 80 points, matching the franchise record set in three other seasons. They are 5-1 in those games. ... Golden State, which lost to San Antonio on Friday night, is 2-6 in the first of back-to-back games and 4-4 in the second.
