PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- Everything went according to the Portland Trail Blazers' game plan.
Bonzi Wells worked out his kinks by driving to the basket, and the team exploited the strength advantage Zach Randolph had on the Memphis Grizzlies' big men.
Randolph had 20 points and 16 rebounds to lead the Trail Blazers to a 93-87 victory Wednesday night.
Wells scored 10 of his 17 points in the first quarter for the Blazers, who led by as many as 22 points. The day before, Wells was fined $10,000 by his team after making an obscene gesture at a fan in the Blazers' loss Monday to Philadelphia.
Wells, shooting just 36.2 percent in the Blazers' first three games, was 7-of-12 on the night. Guarded by slower Mike Miller, Wells put away his jumper, and took the ball to the rim.
"Coach told me to go to hole a little more to get my confidence," Wells said.
Miller had 19 points before fouling out for the Grizzlies, who won their previous two games. Pau Gasol also had 19 points.
Rasheed Wallace added nine points and 10 rebounds. The 6-foot-11 forward moved to small forward this season to make room for Randolph in the starting lineup. It's a move that has paid off -- Randolph is averaging 18 points and 11 rebounds.
"Zach is doing a pretty good job in the post, Mo (Cheeks) wants him there, and it is working out for us," Wallace said.
The Blazers outrebounded the Grizzlies 50-37.
"I thought Randolph played a great game," Memphis coach Hubie Brown said. "Twenty and 16 -- the young man is really blossoming into a real force."
Portland led 73-57 at the end of the third quarter, but the Grizzlies whittled the lead down to 81-73. Jeff McInnis' layup with 43 seconds left put the Blazers' lead back into double-digits at 89-79, ending the rally.
The Blazers took a 19-5 lead. Wallace hit a 3-pointer in the second quarter to give Portland a 40-20 advantage. Qyntel Woods hit a pair of free throws, giving Portland its biggest lead of the half, but the Grizzlies went on a 6-0 run to pull to 42-30.
McInnis' shot was waived off at the buzzer and the Blazers took a 50-32 lead into halftime.
Memphis shot just 25.6 percent -- 11-of-43 -- in the first half.
The Grizzlies cut the lead to 54-45 in the third when James Posey hit a 3-pointer, but Portland pulled away again, going on a 13-4 run.
A mixture of boos and cheers greeted Wells, who also threw a water bottle and a towel on the court in frustration during loss to the 76ers.
Wells made an obscene gesture to a fan who was heckling Wallace during a timeout in the fourth quarter. After the game, Wells denied making the gesture, and later said he didn't remember it.
Game notes
Portland forward Ruben Patterson was placed on the injured list Wednesday night because of left Achilles' tendinitis. ... Guard Derek Anderson did not play because of back spasms. He has missed three of the Blazers' first four games. ... Two of the Grizzlies' three biggest comebacks in history have come against the Trail Blazers. Their biggest was March 25, 2002, when they trailed by 25 points, but won 103-100. Memphis was down by 20 last April 11, but beat the Blazers 96-93.
