Reserve guard Udrih gives San Antonio spark

SAN ANTONIO (AP) -- Even with Tony Parker not quite at 100 percent, the San Antonio Spurs were able to quicken their pace when needed and rally for a 94-91 victory Wednesday night over the Orlando Magic.

With Parker missing the fourth quarter with a groin injury, the Spurs rallied from a 12-point deficit at the SBC Center.

Tim Duncan had 24 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Spurs to their 10th victory in 11 home games this season.

"We struggled in the third quarter," Duncan said. "Things just weren't going in. Their guards took control of the game."

Orlando guard Cuttino Mobley led the Magic with 21 points, Steve Francis had 20 and Grant Hill added 18. Francis missed a game-tying 3-point shot in the final seconds.

"It was right there," Orlando coach Johnny Davis said. "We just didn't make some plays we needed down the stretch and they made plays at the end of the game."

Manu Ginobili added 17 points for the Spurs, and Parker had 13 while starting despite the groin injury.

Rookie Beno Udrih had eight points and seven assists after replacing Parker.

"Beno stepped in and did a good job," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "It was great to have him playing that way. We didn't want to give Tony too many minutes. And Beno was rolling anyway so it worked out."

With the Magic leading 76-64 with less than two minutes left in the third quarter, Udrih led the Spurs on a 23-10 run.

Facing a double team, Udrih first found Malik Rose cutting into the lane for a one-handed dunk that pulled the Spurs within 76-66. Udrih then hit a 3-pointer and set up Ginobili for his own 3-pointer to pull the Spurs within 78-72 with 10:26 left in the game.

"He gave us two key shots," Ginobili said. "He was the owner of the team. He was running the plays great. He showed great poise. He was a big key to the comeback."

Udrih also gave up the ball quickly on a break, allowing Devin Brown to score on a one-handed dunk that gave the Spurs an 87-86 lead they never relinquished.

Udrih was the statistical equal of fellow rookie Dwight Howard, who the NBA's No. 1 draft pick. Howard fouled out late in the fourth quarter after scoring eight points and grabbing seven rebounds in 27 minutes.

"Because I'm a rookie, every game and every minute that I get on the court I should prove myself to everybody and myself," " Udrih said. "I think that I did a good job."

The rally was needed after the Magic outscored the Spurs 28-12 in the third period to erase a 54-48 halftime deficit.

The groin injury that nearly kept Parker from playing wasn't a factor at the start of the game. Parker got the Spurs off to a fast start by scoring or assisting on nine of his team's first 11 points.
