MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- When the game was on the line, the San
Antonio Spurs relied on the NBA's MVP.
Tim Duncan slams home two of his game-high 29 points; he also hit game-winning basket at the buzzer.
Tim Duncan hit a 12-footer as time expired in overtime Monday
night to give San Antonio a 103-101 victory over the Memphis
Officials reviewed the final play and said Duncan made the shot
with .8 seconds remaining, capping a comeback for the Spurs -- who
trailed by seven points early in the 5-minute overtime.
''We went with our horse and feel that he got the job done,''
Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. ''He missed a few shots, but even
Michael (Jordan) misses.''
Duncan, last season's league MVP, finished with 29 points and 14
rebounds. He scored nine points in overtime as San Antonio improved
to 25-3 against the Grizzlies by winning its 20th straight in the
''It was a good shot,'' Memphis center Lorenzen Wright said of
Duncan's game-winner. ''It was the kind of shot you dream about
making. ... We played good defense. He was just able to make the
Memphis, winless in four games this season, scored the first
seven points in overtime. But turnovers and missed shots down the
stretch allowed the Spurs to outscore the Grizzlies 7-0 over the
''We just couldn't close the deal,'' Memphis coach Sidney Lowe
said. ''I am hurt. They played so hard, and they deserved to win
that ballgame. We executed down the stretch, but we just couldn't
hold on to it.''
Memphis' Shane Battier hit a 15-footer with 30 seconds left in
regulation to tie it at 90. Battier missed a similar jumper with
about 5 seconds left in regulation.
Memphis led 50-49 after two quarters, its first halftime lead
''It's like the old saying: 'You don't want to see anyone lose,
because both of us played our hearts out,''' Popovich said. ''But
we'll take the win.''
Memphis went with its third different starting lineup in
four games. Lowe said he wasn't trying to match up with the taller
Spurs' front line, but rather was trying to find the right
combination of players to get the Grizzlies untracked. ... San
Antonio's Steve Smith missed his third consecutive game with a
strained right groin. ... Speedy Claxton of the Spurs missed his
first game after being put on the injured list with a dislocated
right shoulder. ... Memphis has given up at least 100 points in all
four games this season.
