Tiago Splitter opts to have hip surgery, will miss rest of season

Atlanta Hawks center Tiago Splitter will have hip surgery and will miss the rest of the season.

The Hawks announced Tuesday that Splitter elected to undergo the procedure on his right hip.

Splitter visited with multiple specialists before ultimately deciding to have the surgery, according to the Hawks. The team also announced that it will release another update on Splitter once the surgery is complete.

Splitter, 31, has missed the Hawks' last six games but has been bothered by the injury for most of this season, his first in Atlanta.

The 6-foot-11 Splitter averaged 5.6 points and 3.3 rebounds in 36 games this season. The Hawks acquired Splitter last July in a trade with the San Antonio Spurs.
