KAUNAS, Lithuania -- Basketball Hall of Famer Arvydas Sabonis is in intensive care after suffering a heart attack, doctors in Lithuania say.

Doctors in Sabonis' hometown of Kaunas said Wednesday that the former NBA player's condition is stable and not life-threatening.

The 46-year-old Sabonis was rushed to the hospital Tuesday night after going into cardiac arrest while playing basketball.

Sabonis helped the Soviet Union win gold at the 1988 Olympics, beating the United States in the semifinals. The 7-foot-3 center played seven seasons for the Portland Trail Blazers between 1995 and 2003.

He retired from professional sports six years ago and in August was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame.
