Funny money? FAs about to get paid in NBA

With the salary cap going through the roof and most teams having money to burn, the NBA's silly season -- which starts Friday -- will not disappoint.

Jeff Hornacek knows the Knicks need to fill voids at shooting guard and center in free agency but suggests center may be a priority early on. "We don't necessarily need a (shooting guard) who can create a bunch of plays because we should have enough guys who can do that. So when you look at it that way, maybe the (center) may be a little bit more important of a position right now," he said after the Knicks' Summer League practice. On the center front, the Knicks and center Joakim Noah have mutual interest in one another and some in the Knicks' organization have interest in Timofey Mozgov, per sources. The club will have $30 million to spend in free agency so it will be difficult to obtain elite players at both center and shooting guard.

The Philadelphia 76ers, Brooklyn Nets and Sacramento Kings are among the teams interested in Portland restricted free agent Allen Crabbe, sources say. The Blazers extended a $2.7 million qualifying offer to Crabbe, according to CSNNW. That allows Portland to match any offer to Crabbe. The guard figures to garner an offer much higher than $2.7 million from competing teams next month. He averaged 10.3 points and 2.7 rebounds in 26 minutes a game last season, numbers that make the 24-year-old attractive on the open market, particularly with the increase in cap space this summer.

Jeff Hornacek has a 'big supporter' in Carmelo Anthony. Anthony explains why here: "He came to see me work out a couple of times, which was surprising.... That was good feeling just to see the energy and vibe, it was a lot different," Anthony said Monday at the unveiling of the Team USA roster in Harlem. "For him to take that step and want to have that conversation with me, wanting to start off the relationship on the right foot, I accepted that. How we're going to play, we haven't discussed basketball... but I'm a big supporter.''
