Leftover from my conversation with Kyrie Irving at USA Basketball camp, we spoke about his reaction to public scrutiny, which he's still adjusting to as a five-year vet:
On how his life has changed since the championship: "I think it's just a lot more eyes on what I'm doing in my life. That's it. I don't particularly like it because I like my life closed off (except for) the people I love most and I'm very private about who I am and what I do, but it is what it is."
On how his celebratory yacht party was perceived: "I think it became a surprise to me because there's so many things going on in the world other than people worrying about someone coming out and trying to put a story out on something ridiculous as that. So, there's just so much going on, rather than me being the topic of an ‘all-white party' where I don't invite anyone from my race, so I was just baffled by it. I was just like, ‘This is not important.' But I guess it's news and I guess it's popular and I guess I just won a championship so everyone wants to focus on what's going on (with me), but I really didn't care. But I put that on Facebook to kind of remind people that I stand tall with who I am. I really don't care what anyone else says but I'm going to let you guys know that I am who I am because of the family and the way I was raised by my family."
