Spurs coach Gregg Popovich on the key factors in the sustained excellence of Tim Duncan and Dirk Nowitzki: I think they have really high character in a sense of being mature enough to understand the responsibility that they have with that talent. They have the mental capacity and mental toughness to understand that they need to bring it every night, and they take pride in that. Thats a special competitiveness and mental acuity that a lot of players just dont have. Most players have no idea what its like to be somebody like that who brings it night after night after night for so many years. Theyre definitely in a special category.

How has Dirk Nowitzki's game changed as he has aged? "Not much. He looks the same to me," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "Hes a remarkable player, competitor. Fierce competitor, class act, special guy."

The Mavs pride themselves on protecting the ball, committing the fourth fewest turnovers in the NBA, which makes the 36 turnovers committed during their two-game losing streak even more frustrating. "Were beating ourselves," guard Raymond Felton said. "As a team collectively, were going to figure it out just like we did before and start another win streak."

Dirk Nowitzki on the message the Mavs received from starting this road trip with two losses: "Weve got to get better. We knew that during the six-game win streak. Weve got to keep working. Weve got to get better defensively, work together, end the possession with rebounding and then we can get our flow game working. We gave up [117] in OKC and 110 to a slow-paced team. Its just not good enough."

Fade Dwight Powell

He's been a good under-the-radar value play during the start of the season. But with JaVale McGee back in the lineup for Dallas, Powell's playing time looks to get cut back -- he only played 13 minutes last game. DFS building blocks

Dwight Powell played a season-low 13 minutes in Sunday night's loss to the Thunder, the first game JaVale McGee has been active for the Mavs. Powell has averaged 10.4 points and 7.1 rebounds in 21.5 minutes as the primary backup at center and power forward, but McGee will likely get most of the minutes behind big man Zaza Pachulia. "This does not diminish Powell's importance to the team," coach Rick Carlisle said.

Famed high flyers Dirk Nowitzki and Zaza Pachulia have a friendly wager on who will finish the season with more dunks. Pachulia leads by a 3-1 margin at this point. "He's got it easy," Nowitzki said. "He just gets dump-offs and he's wide open. I've got to work for mine, so he's probably going to win that bet."

Coaches Assoc. rips refs' union over Budenholzer

The NBA Coaches Association on Tuesday called comments made by the referees' union regarding the league's discipline of Mike Budenholzer "unwarranted and reckless verbal attacks."

Center JaVale McGee had an encouraging Mavs debut with eight points on 4-of-5 shooting and six rebounds in 11 minutes. McGee, who has been limited to 28 games over the past two seasons due to complications from a stress fracture in his left leg, received medical clearance Saturday night to play limited minutes. "Were at a point where hes really not going to make any further improvement unless he gets in games," coach Rick Carlisle said. "Hes feeling good, so well work him in gradually. He did some good things. It helps to have another big man."

Tim MacMahon ESPN Staff Writer

Dirk Nowitzki after the Mavs' winning streak was snapped: "Weve got a lot of work to do. We knew that before we won six in a row. Weve got to play hard. Weve got to play together. ... Weve got to defend, weve got to rebound and I like our chances against anybody."

The Mavs thought Wesley Matthews got fouled in the final seconds of Sunday's loss to the Thunder and should have had a chance to send the game into overtime from the free throw line. "I havent looked at the film yet, but it looked like Wes Matthews got cross-body blocked and the play continued and the ball got loose," coach Rick Carlisle said. "But look, it didnt come down to that. It came down to the fact that our defense wasnt good enough, we missed a lot of free throws and we turned it over too much. So weve got to improve those three areas."

Thunder squeak by Mavericks (0:50)
