Cuban: Chandler 'has right to be salty' at Mavs

Mark Cuban understands why Tyson Chandler would be a bit mad at the Mavs since the team's front office has twice given him second-fiddle treatment in free agency.

Mavs owner Mark Cuban is committed to keeping Rick Carlisle in Dallas long term but says he hasn't thought much about a contract extension as the coach enters the final season of his contract. "We obviously want to keep Rick and he doesn't want to go anywhere, so I don't see it being an issue," Cuban said on 103.3 FM ESPN.

How much does retirement cross the mind of seventh-leading all-time scorer Dirk Nowitzki as he enters his 18th season? "Obviously it gets closer, but it's not like I'm thinking about the beach every day," Nowitzki said. "I want to play two more years under contract here, hopefully at a high level, compete, hopefully be efficient when I'm out there. And then retirement obviously comes soon enough."

The Mavs have a long-term outlook after giving Wesley Matthews a four-year, $70 million contract months removed from surgery to repair a torn Achilles tendon. "I understand the business aspect of it," said Matthews, who was dunking off a vertical leap after Thursday's practice. "It's a great thing to be wanted by the franchise, and they want me. Of course, they want me for four years. I just feel that the four years starts opening night."

It's wait and see for Mavs and JaVale McGee

A healthy JaVale McGee would be the Mavs' best option to start at center. But the Mavs have no idea when McGee will be healthy.

Samuel Dalembert has a chance to compete to be the Mavs' starting center, but he's not off to a good start. "Sam needs to get in better shape," coach Rick Carlisle said. "He knows that and he's working hard at it."

Matthews, Mavs disagree on return date

Wesley Matthews, who is recovering from a torn Achilles, wants to return by opening night on Oct. 28, but coach Rick Carlisle said that likely won't happen: "We're going to have to fight to keep him off the court."

Dirk Nowitzki: Not dwelling on DeAndre dis

The Dallas star believes the team has "recovered fine" from DeAndre Jordan's flip-flop that saw him spurn a verbal agreement with the Mavs to stay with the Clippers: "We all have changed our minds before, so I don't think him changing the decision was that big of a deal. I think how it was handled after was the big deal to us."

Mavs coach Rick Carlisle basically rules out Wesley Matthews being ready for the opener. "He's not going to want to tell you that and we're going to have to fight to keep him off the court, but we've got to do this the right way."

Mavericks owner Mark Cuban said Chandler Parsons, who is coming off knee surgery in May, and Wesley Matthews, who had Achilles surgery in March, are both questionable to start in the team's regular-season opener Oct. 28. "They're on schedule, so there's a chance. But we're not going to rush them," Cuban said.

Grantland: The Best Beef in the NBA Is Doc Rivers vs. Mark Cuban

At the moment, there are several feuds in varying states of simmer scattered across the league, but Cuban and Rivers, because it's a battle of wits and quips between two fiftysomething, ostensible adults in upper management, is clearly the most entertaining.
