Mavs were smart to redo Dirk's deal

Dallas' latest update of Dirk Nowitzki's contract will greatly help the team's cap situation for 2017-18 if Nowitzki elects to play a 20th season then, Kevin Pelton writes. Rating latest NBA deals (Insider)

The Mavs would have to move some salary to be in the market for a max-contract player next summer if Dirk Nowitzki returns for the second season of his contract. Dallas has $61.1 million in salary committed to players for the 2017-18 season, assuming promising 2015 first-round pick Justin Anderson's $1.6 million option is picked up. That would leave less than $16 million in space under the projected cap of $102 million if Nowitzki returns to play his 20th season for a $25 million salary. ESPN's Marc Stein reports that the second season of Nowitzki's two-year, $50 million deal features a $5 million team option in case the face of the franchise opts to retire.

Rodrigue Beaubois will decline the Mavericks' invitation to bring their former first-round pick back to Dallas, according to a league source. The Mavs offered Beaubois, 28, a three-year partially guaranteed contract for the veteran's minimum. He would have competed for a roster spot in training camp with summer league star Jonathan Gibson, whose three-year minimum deal features a fully guaranteed salary for the first season. Spanish reports indicate Beaubois, who showed flashes of brilliance as a rookie in 2009-10 before injuries marred the rest of his four-year Mavs tenure, is close to agreeing on a deal with Saski Baskonia in Spain.
