Mavs guard Devin Harris underwent surgeries on his left great toe and left thumb Tuesday morning, the team announced. The operations were performed by separate doctors at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. The toe injury bothered Harris for much of the season, and he played in the playoffs with his thumb heavily taped.

Rick Carlisle says the Mavericks must give Dirk Nowitzki "the ultimate respect" in free agency, regardless of Nowitzki indicating he has no intention of leaving Dallas. "Hey, we're not taking this thing for granted," Carlisle said on 103.3 FM ESPN in Dallas. "When you do that, that's when you can get in trouble. ... We've got to take every measure to make sure he understands how much he means to all of us."

Dirk Nowitzki said that he will opt out of the final season of his contract, a change from his previous statements. "We had one more year on the contract, but I think this is the right thing to do," Nowitzki said on 1310 The Ticket in Dallas. "We're going to sit with Mark and Donnie obviously over the next few weeks and figure out how to improve this franchise again. Ever since after the championship, we've been basically a first-round exit. We've been a seven, eight seed. We've only won a few playoff games, and obviously the goal was to compete at the highest level in my last couple of years, so there is some moving to do, some thinking, some putting our heads together the next few weeks heading into free agency, heading into the draft. So this is just one move that hopefully starts a chain reaction for us to get better again, to compete really at a high level. We'll see how it goes."

Deron Williams intends to opt out of the second season of his contract with the Mavericks, sources told ESPN.com. Williams, 31, who could have made $5.6 million next season, plans to seek a multi-year deal that could be the final contract of his career, the sources said. There will be mutual interest in his return to Dallas after he averaged 14.1 points and 5.8 assists this season. "I would love to be back," Williams said during exit interviews this week. "This was a great year for me. My family is settled and happy here, so it'd definitely be great to be back." Williams, a native of the Dallas area, needs surgery to repair the sports hernia that caused him to miss most of the Mavs' playoff surgery but should be completely healthy entering training camp.

Zaza Pachulia on his season in Dallas: "The biggest highlight for me – biggest highlight, and I mean that – was to play with Dirk, to share the moments on and off the court with this guy. I'm so fortunate to have this experience, to play with him, to see his work ethic and learn things and joke and become closer to him. Life goes on. Basketball is temporary.
