Count Rockets guard James Harden as someone who thinks President Barack Obama would be a great NBA owner. "He's basketball savvy," Harden said. "He loves the game of basketball so I'm sure he'll do very well." According to press secretaryJosh Earnest, President Obama expressed an interest in becoming an NBA owner and talked about being part of an ownership group for a NBA team.

The Houston Rockets will sign Oregon State point guard Gary Payton II as an undrafted free agent according to a source. Payton II, the son of NBA Hall of Famer Gary Payton, was a two-time Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year. Payton II averaged 16 points, five assists and 7.8 rebounds in his senior season for Oregon State. Payton II, 6-3, 184 pounds, is expected to sign a three-year contract.

Rockets second-round pick Chinanu Onuaku said he had a heart procedure done for a heart rhythm issue that was discovered at the NBA combine. Onuaku said it kept him out roughly two-to-three weeks. "I'm great, no problem at all," Onuaku said Thursday night. "I feel like I have more energy on the basketball court. Yeah it was (scary) at first but when they told me that many guys have had it and they've all played, then I was fine."

Rockets selected Zhou Qi from the Xinjiang Flying Tigers in Chinese Basketball League with the 43rd pick of the draft. In 42 games last season, the 7-2 Qi averaged 15.8 points and 9.8 rebounds per game. ESPN's Fran Fraschilla says Qi blocks shots and has a good outside shot. He need some more muscle in his body but draft evaluator Chad Ford from ESPN said he has a high basketball IQ.

What you need to know about Zhou Qi

Says NBA Insider Chad Ford: "Zhou is super talented, skilled and long -- but his rail-thin body needs to add a lot of muscle. Strength continues to be the major issue for him." Stats, analysis, projections on Qi

Zhou Qi was the top-rated prospect in my stats-only projections using his listed age (20). Dropped to the second round in part due to rumors he's older, as well as concerns about his frame. At 43, a worthwhile shot for the Rockets.

The Rockets selected Louisville center/forward Chinanu Onuaku with the 37th overall selection of the draft. Onuaku, 6-10, 245 pounds, averaged 9.9 points and 8.5 rebounds in his sophomore season. Onuaku, who has a 7-2 wing span, is a good rim defender according to draft experts but needs work on the offensive end. It was discovered during the NBA combine Onuaku had a heart rhythm issue. Onuaku elected to remain in the draft despite the health problem. It's the second consecutive year, the Rockets drafted a player from Louisville. Montreal Harrell was a second-round pick last year.

What you need to know about Onuaku

"Onuaku might not be the most polished prospect in the draft, but he's got an awesome NBA body and plays physically. He rebounds, alters shots and is still just 19 years old." -- NBA Insider Chad Ford. Stats, analysis, projections on Onuaku

With the first round over, the Houston Rockets will now concentrate on the second round with their two picks. However, the Rockets gave up the 15th overall pick to Denver in the Ty Lawson trade last summer. So, who did the Nuggets draft? Juan Hernangomez from Spain. At the trade deadline, Houston tried to get its first-round pick back when it completed a trade with Detroit. The league rescinded the deal after forward Donatas Motiejunas failed his physical. If the trade had been completed, the Rockets would have gotten the 18th overall selection. Detroit drafted Marquette's Henry Ellenson with the pick on Thursday.
