Alvin Gentry on his relationship with Danny Ferry, who joined the Pelicans as a special adviser after two years away from the NBA: "It's fine, it's fine. I've known Danny a long time. Actually, he was kidding me because I watched him play in high school when he was at DeMatha [High School]. He's an extremely bright guy. He's here as a consultant and to challenge us with ideas, and things like that. I think he's done a great job with it."

Alvin Gentry seemed excited about the potential of second-round pick Cheick Diallo, a raw second-rounder. "He's an energy guy who plays extremely, extremely hard. I think he'll be a fan favorite. He'll do it in practice, he'll do it in the games, he's gonna play extremely hard and he's a guy that can get up and down the court." As far as his position? "I just think he's a basketball player."

Buddy Hield on what he brings to New Orleans: "Just a great teammate. A guy that can spread the floor for guys like Anthony. He's so special the way that he does things, the way he can play both ways, score the ball in a variety of ways -- pick-and-pop, face-up, post-up. So just spreading the floor and making life easier for Anthony on the court."

Dell Demps said he was thrilled to see Cheick Diallo drop in the draft, prompting the Pelicans GM to package picks Nos. 39 and 40 to move up to 33. "We like what he's gonna bring, and his attitude and his energy," Demps said. "When you talk to so many people about him, and everybody says the same thing: ‘Is he a good kid? No, no, he's not a good kid, he's a great kid, he's a phenomenal kid.' In our interview process with him, when he walked out the room we're all sitting there like, ‘Wow!' We just listened to this guy. You root for him. You really do."

What you need to know about Stone

"Stone is a low-post beast who can score in a variety of ways. He's an old-school big man who excels in the paint, but his so-so rebounding numbers are still a cause for concern." - NBA Insider Chad Ford. More on Diamond Stone

The Pelicans package their two second-rounders, according to reports, to move up and nab Cheick Diallo, once the No. 7 high-schooler in last year's class and No. 27 on Chad Ford's Big Board. Diallo, 19, played just 27 games last season because of eligibility concerns by the NCAA, but showed a big motor and the sort of physical tools to make an impact on New Orleans' 28th-ranked defense.

Buddy Hield, to media in Brooklyn, on what New Orleans can expect from him: "High-character kid who's going to -- that's known for his basketball but also known for helping around the community, for doing whatever it takes to win. I hate losing, and just a kid that's willing to put in all the effort he needs to to make the organization better."

Hield on being drafted by Pelicans at No. 6

Pelicans G Buddy Hield tells P.J. Carlesimo, Marc Kestecher and Ryen Russillo about being taken by New Orleans with the No. 6 pick in the NBA draft, how he needs to improve and more.

Justin Verrier ESPN Staff Writer

Pelicans general manager Dell Demps said the following about drafting Buddy Hield No. 6 overall in a brief meeting with media: "We're excited to draft Buddy Hield. College player of the year, phenomenal player. We're excited to add him to our group. He did really well in his workout out with us [and] his interview. Just a high-character person who will enhance our program. Like any other rookie, he's gonna have to go through a learning curve. But we think that'll help -- being in college for four years. He's a self-made guy. We're excited to have him. He's one of the guys that we targeted."
