Rose to Chicago: 'Thank you' for trading me (0:18)

Ian Begley ESPN Staff Writer

Here's why Derrick Rose changed his number from 1 to 25, the number he wore as a high school star in Chicago: "I'm playing in New York but I'm bringing something from Chicago with me out here. That's one of the reasons I chose No. 25." Rose wore No. 25 as a high school player at Chicago powerhouse Simeon Career Academy. The number was also worn at Simeon by Ben Wilson, the late Chicago prep star.

Derrick Rose on Kristaps Porzingis: "That's somebody I would die to play with and now I got two of those guys (in KP & Carmelo)."

Jeff Hornacek wants Kristaps Porzingis, the 7-3, 240-pound big man, to get stronger. But he doesn't want him to add weight solely to match up against 5s: "If he's 7-3 and he's got a little bit more bulk to him, that he can play that 5," Hornack said Thursday. "We obviously want to get him stronger. But to put on a bunch of weight so he can play more of the five is not a great thing to do."

Ian Begley ESPN Staff Writer

Phil Jackson sees benefits of playing Kristaps Porzingis at center, with a caveat: he doesn't want to use him as a full-time center. "I'm not going to limit him to a position," Jackson said Thursday. "I do think that he's going to play a center role. Last year he had minutes at it. We see how this game is evolving into a lot of guys that are going small at the end of quarters, end of halves, end of games. Is he one of those guys that fits into those grouping that can play small ball at the end of a game? Yeah, I think so. I kind of think he can."

Ian Begley ESPN Staff Writer

Based on his last two press conferences, I don't get the sense that Phil Jackson is a big fan of the NY media.

Ian Begley ESPN Staff Writer

There are people in the Knicks organization who'd like to pursue Joakim Noah in free agency. And the interest seems to be mutual. People familiar with the situation say the Knicks are one team that Noah will be interested in in free agency. It will be key to find a contract that works for both sides, obviously. But Derrick Rose and Noah are close; Noah also has a good relationship with Carmelo Anthony. The Bulls center also grew up in New York and attended high school in Brooklyn. Also, for those interested in such things, Rose and Noah have been spotted in NYC together in the last 24 hours.
