Will Nowitzki return to Mavs? (3:06)

Dirk Nowitzki said that he will opt out of the final season of his contract, a change from his previous statements. "We had one more year on the contract, but I think this is the right thing to do," Nowitzki said on 1310 The Ticket in Dallas. "We're going to sit with Mark and Donnie obviously over the next few weeks and figure out how to improve this franchise again. Ever since after the championship, we've been basically a first-round exit. We've been a seven, eight seed. We've only won a few playoff games, and obviously the goal was to compete at the highest level in my last couple of years, so there is some moving to do, some thinking, some putting our heads together the next few weeks heading into free agency, heading into the draft. So this is just one move that hopefully starts a chain reaction for us to get better again, to compete really at a high level. We'll see how it goes."

Mavericks 'proud' despite early playoff exit

The Mavericks' season came to a merciful end Monday night. The injury-depleted Dallas team put up its best fight possible in the five-game series.

Deron Williams intends to opt out of the second season of his contract with the Mavericks, sources told ESPN.com. Williams, 31, who could have made $5.6 million next season, plans to seek a multi-year deal that could be the final contract of his career, the sources said. There will be mutual interest in his return to Dallas after he averaged 14.1 points and 5.8 assists this season. "I would love to be back," Williams said during exit interviews this week. "This was a great year for me. My family is settled and happy here, so it'd definitely be great to be back." Williams, a native of the Dallas area, needs surgery to repair the sports hernia that caused him to miss most of the Mavs' playoff surgery but should be completely healthy entering training camp.

Zaza Pachulia on his season in Dallas: "The biggest highlight for me – biggest highlight, and I mean that – was to play with Dirk, to share the moments on and off the court with this guy. I'm so fortunate to have this experience, to play with him, to see his work ethic and learn things and joke and become closer to him. Life goes on. Basketball is temporary. The friendships and the relationships are going to continue."

Rick Carlisle on Deron Williams: "I thoroughly enjoyed working with him. ... Of course I'd like to see him back."

Chandler Parsons sounds like a man who plans to re-sign with the Mavs: "Dallas is home to me. I loved it here. I came here to be a great player and to win a lot of games, and I've yet to do that here. So I feel that I have a lot of unfinished business here that I'd love to continue and grow into the player that I saw myself being when I signed here. The quicker we can get that done allows me to start recruiting and doing that whole thing."

Raymond Felton smiled when asked if he thought he made some money during this playoff series. "What you think?" said Felton, who is entering free agency after averaging 15.0 points, 4.6 rebounds and 4.6 assists in the series against the Thunder. "I'm pretty sure I put myself in a good situation. I would say that. Hopefully, that situation is back here again next year and we can make that happen. I love Dallas."

Wesley Matthews on Dirk Nowitzki: "He's one of the last dinosaurs left, and he's still remarkable."

Chandler Parsons on Dwight Howard: "I think he can still dominate the game. I think he can still be a great player in this league. And I think he's going to leave Houston, so why not come here?" Dirk Nowitzki, on the other hand, declined to comment when asked about the possibility of trying to bring Howard to Dallas, saying it's too early to discuss free agency.
