SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Jordan Walker scored in the 83rd minute to lead fourth-ranked North Carolina past top-ranked Notre Dame 2-1 Friday in the semifinals of the NCAA women's soccer tournament. In the other semifinal, Stephanie Rigamat scored in the 77th minute to give UCLA a 1-0 victory over Portland.
UCLA (19-3-1) advanced to its first title game. The Bruins will play North Carolina on Sunday. Amy Warner scored for Notre Dame (23-1-1), which had its school-record 24-game unbeaten streak snapped. The Irish last loss in the 1999 NCAA finals against North Carolina. Walker picked up a loose ball at the top of the penalty box after a Notre Dame defender had cleared the ball from in front of the net. Walker's hot sailed to the far post. North Carolina's Catherine Reddick saved a goal when she raced into an open net in the 63rd minute and cleared a shot by Notre Dame's Ali Lovelace. Tar Heels goalkeeper Jenni Branam had come out to attack the ball, leaving an open goal. North Carolina tied the score at 65:11 after Jena Kluegel sent a corner kick to the front of the net, where Kim Patrick outjumped the defense and headed the ball over the outstretched hands of Notre Dame goalkeeper Liz Wagner. Notre Dame's first shot of the match resulted in Warner's goal at 19:48. Meotis Erickson sent a through ball into the middle of the field near the top of the penalty box. Warner gathered it in and found herself one-on-one with Branam. After dribbling right and drawing Branam out of the net, Warner kicked it past her and into the far corner of the net. UCLA's Venus James set up the only goal with a crossing pass from the left side in the air. Rigamat, who has eight game-winning goals this year, headed the ball past Pilots' goalkeeper Cheryl Loveless, who allowed just her ninth goal of the season. Portland (18-4-0), playing in its fifth semifinal in the past seven years, was trying to reach its first final since 1995. Portland had two great scoring chances in the first 18 minutes of the second half. Betsy Barr's header off a corner kick from Vanessa Talbott hit the near post. Later, Erin Misaki sent a free kick into the penalty area, and Barr's shot was knocked over the net by Bruins' goalie CiCi Peterson. |
